Although I was assigned a nurse [at Shady Grove Fertility], she left the clinic and I wasn't told right away. I was assigned another nurse, and the same thing happened. My current nurse has been helpful, but sometimes take a little too long to answer emails. And I have not met her in person...The clinic has the process down pat. It is extremely efficient and that is great when you still have a full time job. They are timely with getting your results, and overall very friendly. Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
The clinic has the process down pat. It is extremely efficient and that is great when you still have a full time job. They are timely with getting your results, and overall very friendly. I honestly cannot think of any weaknesses at this time.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Nair was very thorough with her explanations and allowed me to ask as many questions as possible. She was warm and easy to talk to, but also made sure I understood the reality of the situation, as I was not getting younger, and we had been trying for several years.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Although I was assigned a nurse, she left the clinic and I wasn't told right away. I was assigned another nurse, and the same thing happened. My current nurse has been helpful, but sometimes take a little too long to answer emails. And I have not met her in person.
How was your experience with Anitha Nair?
She was very helpful in helping us decide how to move forward. We only spoke with her during the planning stages, however. Not during the treatments or between IUIs. But, the staff was so responsive, there wasn't really a need to reach out to her.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anitha Nair?
Do your own homework and ask all the questions you need.
Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles and their degree of success.
For my first IUI, we did 50mg Clomid days 3-7, then a blue pill to help with thickening the lining that we started on day 13 and continued until a negative pregnancy test. I also too progesterone the day after the IUI until a negative pregnancy test. For the first IUI, I also did a trigger shot. The second IUI we upped it to 100mg Clomid, no blue pill needed, no trigger needed (surged on my own), and am taking progesterone.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anitha Nair.
My insurance did not cover anything, except some of the medications. Each IUI cost $1600 and medication cost somewhere between $140 and $200

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Nair, and the nurse that works with her, was always so encouraging and kind. I had a cycle end in a chemical pregnancy during a snow storm and Dr. Nair made a point of calling even though she couldn't make it into the office to see how I was doing and answer my questions.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Laura was an excellent nurse and answered all of my (many) questions throughout the process. She delivered bad news delicately and good news with excitement. She was very encouraging even when a cycle seemed to be going poorly.
How was your experience with Anitha Nair?
I was fortunate enough to have quick (3 cycles) success so I didn't have a ton of interaction with Dr. Nair. That being said, she personally came down to the clinic and did my ultrasound (without my asking) and answered my questions when one of my cycles wasn't going according to plan. I was impressed with her knowledge and compassion.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anitha Nair?
The process feels like it takes forever, regardless of how quickly you achieve pregnancy, but trust your doctors and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Because I wasn't ovulating, at least with any regularity, Dr. Nair started me on 50mg of Clomid with an Ovidrel trigger. Follicle growth was monitored by ultrasound. I stopped responding to 50mg after my first cycle so, after a failed round of 50mg, the dosage was increased to 10mg for the second half of my second cycle and for my third (successful) cycle.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anitha Nair.
I was very fortunate to have insurance coverage for my treatment, lab work, and medications.

Nursing staff [at Shady Grove Fertility] is wonderful. Their communication by email and phone was very dependable and quick, and weekend nursing support was always available. When there was one clerical mix-up about what blood test I was to have (it wasn't clear whether it was a nursing error or lab error), the nurses took responsibility and figured out a plan to move forward.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
This clinic is the largest one in the DC area. I was a bit wary that it would feel like a factory given its size, but I found the clinic to be very well run, efficient, and caring. The front desk staff and lab technicians quickly came to know me by name, and I always felt like I was in good hands. Although I never made it to IVF, I was impressed by the size and quality of the embryology lab compared to others in the area, and their cutting edge research and adapting protocols.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Nair was clearly invested in my care, as were all of the staff, nurses, and lab technicians. I always felt supported and well cared for. Dr. Nair was so warm and thoughtful in treating me, and her joy at my (eventual!) pregnancy was genuine and quite touching.

How was your experience with Anitha Nair?
I loved working with Dr. Nair - she is kind, thoughtful, confident in her recommendations and shows that she takes an individual patient's circumstances into account when recommending treatment.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anitha Nair?
Don't be afraid to ask questions - Dr. Nair is wonderful at answering them and explaining her treatment plan.
Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Without past fertility issues, Dr. Nair recommended starting with natural cycle IUIs. She was very willing to let me determine how aggressive I wanted to be, and when to decide to ratchet it up. She gave me the option to reassess the treatment plan after either 3 or 6 cycles. I originally said 6 cycles but after 5 IUIs I was frustrated and asked to add medication. Dr. Nair was supportive, and recommended a Clomid cycle. When that failed, Dr. Nair suggested an injectable cycle with Clomid, While I was willing to throw in the kitchen sink at that point, Dr. Nair was careful to balance my frustration with a careful consideration of avoiding multiples. I really respected that she wasn't just focused on a positive outcome - she was truly committed to the best outcome *for me* and my situation.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anitha Nair.
My insurance covered the fertility treatments, although my insurance plan changed throughout the treatment. On average, my IUI costs ranged from $200 to $400 per cycle, not including drugs or donor sperm.

I mostly went to the K street office of Shady Grove Fertility. The front desk staff, nurses who take blood and ultrasound technicians were amazing. They are so friendly, nice, gentle, and caring. I sometimes had to wait a while before being seen since the office is so busy which is not great, but as people, the staff is fantastic...Kristal was amazing. She always called promptly with results, was caring, and compassionate and provided accurate information in a timely manner. Kristal then left the practice and I was assigned Myasia Reliford who was good, but not quite as thorough or talkative/compassionate as Kristal.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Widra and the staff are very nice and try to make appointments and conversations as comfortable as possible. However, I did find that the actual protocols were less tailored to me as a person and that they do the same for everyone. I like that Dr Widra is straightforward.

Kristal was amazing. She always called promptly with results, was caring, and compassionate and provided accurate information in a timely manner. Kristal then left the practice and I was assigned Myasia Reliford who was good, but not quite as thorough or talkative/compassionate as Kristal.
How was your experience with Eric Widra?
Dr Widra is very business - like and straightforward. He is not warm and fuzzy, but provides ample time and explanation for everything. He i s knowledgeable about his field and talks to help patients understand. He always checked in and checked up on me after procedures or to review results. I did find however, that I wished for some more individuated protocols tailored to my specific situation. Or the willingness to try something new or different.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
Feel free to push back and suggest other options if you have them. Know that you are going to get straightforward treatment and respect, but not warm fuzzy hugs from Widra.
Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We started with IUI using Clomid, then added a Gonadotropin, then Ovidrel trigger. None of 5 times I tried the IUI worked. Then for my first attempt at IVF, we did an Antagonist Vivelle Protocol with Vivelle, Cetrotide, and Gonadotropin. Towards the end of the protocol, we were not seeing many eggs being produced so we changed the IVF to an IUI cycle which was unsuccessful. For the next cycle, I did a low dose minimal stimulation protocol with Letrozole, Cetrotide, and Menopur. This also resulted in only 2 eggs being produced. Both fertilized and we implanted both embryos. We did not test these as Widra said there were no options, so no need to test. This cycle resulted in a chemical pregnancy that quickly failed. For the final IVF cycle, I did the same low dose minimal stimulation protocol and only had two eggs, and only was was able to be retrieved. The egg fertilized, was implanted, but resulted in a negative pregnancy test. The rationale for using the low dose stimulation was that with the converted IVF cycle I had taken more medications and it hadnt produced more eggs.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Widra.
All in all, the costs were about $10,000

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady Grove has multiple clinics in the DC metro area. Testing is very process driven, which I appreciated. I knew exactly what and when things were going to happen and I simply followed that process. Some folks might not appreciate being another cog in the fertility factory but I found it comforting; this is all very normal, well managed, and well understood.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
When I met with Nair, she always spoke honestly but kindly. She clearly had reviewed my records before our meetings so we didn't need to explain things again. She always called after a failed cycle and was incredibly kind after a chemical pregnancy/missed carriage. She also left surgery to come down for our first ultrasound after our positive pregnancy test.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I had several primary nurses during my tenure at Shady Grove; some were better than others. I had one, who is no longer there, who did not like to communicate over email. Giving my busy schedule, email was much better than phone. My suggestion would be to establish which method you prefered communication when first meeting with your nurse coordinator.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Lost paperwork
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to send your chart to another clinic
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Failed to convey critical information
How was your experience with Anitha Nair?
I didn't find anything at fault with Nair. She always made sure we had appropriate information and we never left the office without either speaking with a financial person or nurse to answer any additional questions.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anitha Nair?
None.
Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We did 3 IUI's even though they didn't work. It was frustrating but our insurance required it. The clinic was participating in a medical study that required less injections but we did not participate, though the early results seemed promising.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anitha Nair.
My IUI and egg retrieval were covered by insurance. My FET's were not. Shady Grove has self-pay costs. Each FET was approximately $4000 plus cost of medications.

We started straight with IVF - due to my age at the time (42) we agreed not to 'waste' time IUI. I did one egg retrieval- we transferred 3- negative pregnancy test with none viable remaining to freeze. We then met with him to discuss next steps- he said we could try another round of egg retrieval- but given my age and odds- we decided to go to donor eggs. We had 9 embryos- did one transfer and Imiscarried at 6.5 weeks, then we did another transfer which resulted in a chemical pregnancy. The next transfer we transferred 2 embryos which resulted in a chemical pregnancy. We then did PGD on remaining 5 embryos since Dr. Widra felt the results seemed unlikely- came back that only one was chromosomally normal. We were scheduled for another transfer but the morning of the transfer it was cancelled bec. embryo did not survive the thaw. we then discussed options I had adenomyosis? in my uterus that were detected before my first cycle- we retested to see if it got bigger- it did. We talked about options- surgery, try again without surgery and we decided most likely scenario for live birth is gestational carrier. moved forward with new donor and gestational carrier.

How was your experience with Eric Widra?
Dr. Widra was kind and direct, responsive. Sometimes hard to book appointments due to his busy schedule. He made himself available when there were urgent situations where we needed to be in touch. we would definitely recommend him.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
He is factual and clear- if you need a lot of hand holding and warm and fuzzy he may not be who you want (although he is definitely warm and kind).

[Shady Grove - Washington DC's] Strengths - Best front desk staff, great monitoring hours, very organized, very compassionate. Mostly kept appointments on time. Good success statistics, and an ideal result for me. Weaknesses - sometimes ran very late for morning monitoring. So many women doing IVF at the same time! Always saw a different doctor for monitoring appointments -- somewhat stressful, but you get used to it.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
She and all the other doctors at SGF took plenty of time to educate me and my husband and were open and warm at each appointment. I rarely felt rushed, I was always able to ask my questions, and I was always given an honest response with realistic expectations.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I had two separate nurses (was transferred halfway through), and both were great, although they seemed very busy. It was wonderful to communicate via email and phone, and they were both very clear with what, if any, changes needed to be made each day. I asked a lot of questions, and sometimes I felt like I was annoying them, but I always got the info I needed in the end.

How was your experience with Anitha Nair?
Dr. Nair was compassionate and patient with me and my husband. She also made exceptional medical diagnoses, and whenever our path changed, she fully explained her reasoning to me. I felt like she was our partner in this journey, and she truly wanted us to achieve a healthy pregnancy.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anitha Nair?
Be open to things changing as you progress. Trust Dr. Nair and SGF, but ask lots of questions so you still feel like you understand what is going on and why.
Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Menupur (started at 75, ended at 225) Gonal F (started at 150, ended at 225) 6 mornings of Cetrotide .25 HCG trigger 10,000 after 13 days of stimulation Then endometrin and estrogen after transfer. 11 mature eggs (mostly from lef tovary because right was damaged following previous ectopic surgery). 8 eggs fertilized 2 morula embryos transferred on day 5 -- neither had made it to blastocyst 1 blastocyst to freeze on Day 6
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anitha Nair.
Insurance covered a nice portion of the cycle and injections for me. My total came out to about $7,500 (including egg freezing).

Shady Grove is what I assume all clinics are like when you are undergoing elective and extremely profitable medical procedures-cold and focused on payment. Their financial services staff was extremely frustrating. They were unable to answer basic questions and would often tell us contridictorary things. It's the doctors and nurses that make the treatment process survivable...Our primary nurse was extremely positive and good with answering followup questions via email. The nurses that administered our clinical care (blood tests primarily) were wonderful. They made a real effort to get to know us and we're kind and positive throughout the long months we spent visiting them nearly daily.

Shady Grove is what I assume all clinics are like when you are undergoing elective and extremely profitable medical procedures-cold and focused on payment. Their financial services staff was extremely frustrating. They were unable to answer basic questions and would often tell us contridictorary things. It's the doctors and nurses that make the treatment process survivable.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
She went above and beyond to call me and answer questions even outside of office hours.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Our primary nurse was extremely positive and good with answering followup questions via email. The nurses that administered our clinical care (blood tests primarily) were wonderful. They made a real effort to get to know us and we're kind and positive throughout the long months we spent visiting them nearly daily.
How was your experience with Anitha Nair?
She was extremely honest and candid. We appreciated that she didn't "water down" the explanations of treatment. When things did not work out with our first transfer she was quick to recommend a more aggressive protocol that resulted in a pregnancy and live birth. Once we were pregnant she was very kind, keeping us as a patient as long as she was allowed and having us come in for several early scans to reassure us the pregnancy was progressing well.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anitha Nair?
Make sure you like working with your assigned nurse, or request a transfer.
Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We were dealing with a specific issue-a balanced translocation-so the protocol was more straight forward then in cases where you don't know why you aren't getting pregnant. For our embryo transfers, after the first one didn't work Dr Nair recommended an endometrial biopsy which helped us diagnose a mild infection that could be treated and led to a more favorable environment for our second (successful) transfer.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anitha Nair.
Most of our procedures were covered by insurance. Genetic testing was around $8000 out of pocket and embryo freezing and storage was $3000 plus $500/year.

We just had a lot of times that we weren't sure what we were supposed to do next. And the decision was left to us and we didn't know what the best decision was and there was no one to talk it through on the weekend...We originally had a nurse coordinator [at Shady Grove], Allison, who responded to emails but never checked in on me after procedure or test results on her own. She eventually moved to another clinic and was no longer our coordinator, but she never emailed to tell us so much. We found out from Dr. Devine after the fact. Our new nurse was the same way in that she never reached out to check on me on her own. During our third cycle, it was over a weekend, and I didn't know what to do as far as refill the FSH medication again or not. It is expensive and I didn't want to do it if not necessary but I would absolutely do it if it would help. I was told, I could do it if I wanted to. There was no one to talk to since it was the weekend and it was so incredible stressful. I spoke with one nurse who was on call and she was very comforting but didn't have a great answer for me either. The whole day was filled with waiting for a phone call about the results of my monitoring that morning and stressing over whether or not to refill the prescriptions before the pharmacy closed. I emailed both Allison and Jennifer hoping for some guidance. I understand that they do not work on the weekend and so that's why I didn't hear back, but I also never heard from anyone on Monday or ever after that just to check in and see how it all turned out. Or just to say I'm sorry that was so stressful and we'll be in touch with next steps.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
They are a clean facility with friendly front desk staff. They can get you in and out in the morning which is nice when you're trying to get to work. The weakness is that you don't particularly feel connected to anyone and when you have questions you may not have access to someone who can answer them. There is a MD on call, however you will be charged if you use them and its not an emergency.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
We did not directly speak with Dr. Devine for about 2 months when starting the IUI process. We were assigned a nurse coordinator who would handle our questions and act as a liaison. I would come in frequently for monitoring and be seen by different technicians and nurses each time. There were many women lined up outside the clinic each morning waiting to be cycled through for blood work and ultrasounds. There were times when I just wanted to speak with the doctor directly because I didn't feel the nurse our technicians really knew me individually. I will say though that by the third cycle of IUI, Dr. Devine did a better job of calling me directly to discuss the results and options.

How was your experience with Kate Devine?
I do feel that Dr. Devine is a good person. I just felt like there were maybe so many patients that I couldn't get the individualized care that I was hoping for. I had to be my own advocate. The first round of IUI was a fire drill. I came in for day 12 monitoring as scheduled and we realized we needed to quick give myself the trigger shot and come back for IUI the next morning. For the second cycle, I was asked to come in on day 12 again. I requested to come in on day 9 since it seemed I ovulate sooner than most people. They said okay and on day 9 I was ready for my trigger shot and were able to follow the typical schedule better by having a day between the trigger and the IUI. In addition, I also felt I had to be the one to ask questions about "is this the right medication for me?" The first round I took Clomid which produced multiple follicles, but thinned my lining. The second round the nurse did not mention anything would be different and I had to say that I did not want to do the exact same thing as it did not work well the first time. Dr. Devine may have already been thinking she would change the medicine too but this was not communicated to me and I had to make that request. The third round of IUI, I had to request again to come in even earlier. The plan was to give additional shots to help follicle growth if needed. I was asked to come in on day 8. Since previously I was ready to ovulate on day 9, I had to request to come in on day 6 so that we had time to give the shots if needed. It seemed like common sense to me (and all the monitoring was included in our price), but it felt like I was not be treated individually based on my previous responses to the medications and IUI. I felt frustrated a lot of times that I needed to be the one to raise questions and change the course rather than the experts helping guide me through the best course for me.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kate Devine?
Ask questions and request frequent communication with Dr. Devine. She eventually responded well to this and had better communication with us towards the end of our 3 months.
Describe the protocols Kate Devine used in your cycles and their degree of success.
As previously mentioned, my first round of IUI was using Clomid. It produced multiple follicles but it thinned my lining and resulted in a negative pregnancy test. There was a standard protocol for all rounds of IUI, which was ultrasound on day 3, medication day 3-8, and monitoring day 12, with usually IUI day 14. Because I seemed to ovulate early, I had to request to come in earlier than the protocol recommended. I also eventually (3rd IUI cycle) had to begin medication on day 2. For my second cycle I was switched to Letrozole. For my third cycle, I continued with the same dose of Letrozole, but gave myself FSH injections multiple times while being monitored each day. Both the second and third cycles of IUI resulted in only one follicle for ovulation and both resulted in a negative pregnancy test.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kate Devine.
$1800 for each IUI cycle + $50-150 for medications

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady grove is a giant clinic which has its pluses and minuses. On the plus side they have a lot of patients, which means their embryologists have tons of experience. I trusted the lab completely. It was always easy to get the time you want for monitoring and generally they had that process down and things moved. The negative is they are not always organized. I received multiple bills for things i had already paid for (which always ended up working out but took time and effort to deal with). If you have insurance expect it to take a LOT of time and expect them to mess up the paperwork (my insurance company said they are notorious for that). For me their mistake resulted in my initially being rejected even though I should have been approved. Thankfully my insurance company had done a great job at the beginning of telling me what they needed so i knew right away something was wrong. Although i had emailed my nurse and financial coordinator the exact paperwork that was needed they still failed to send it in. The result was a LOT of extra stress and work for me. They were very willing to accept the rejection and only agreed to do the appeal when i pushed (thankfully the doctor was never required since my personally sending in the proper paperwork fixed the problem). They then put in for a freeze all even though i had multiple times made very clear i wanted a fresh transfer, which resulted in more stress and delay. They are very willing to accept bad news and very unwilling to look at what went wrong (from insurance to medical issues). You are a number, which for me was ok. There are people that actually care, but it's not most of the people.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Widra has no idea anything about my care in the few times i actually interacted with him. When i did speak to him about my protocol his answer was simply that is how we do it, when pressed about data i was told they had data i could not see. He had no desire to personalize anything.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Carrie was generally good. She was very sweet. She would generally provide information if she had it. My main issue was many questions she didn't have the answer to and the doctor NEVER responded to questions i had that were outside of her knowledge. I did have a major problem with information getting to insurance at the beginning and I'm not sure how much of that was her fault. She generally didn't know me from any other patient. My biggest complaint was when my fresh transfer was canceled (which i was devastated about frustrated they were not interested in why it happened) she multiple times said we are just going back to the original freeze all plan (it was NEVER the plan to do a freeze all - in fact, once the initial insurance fiasco was resolved it was put in as a freeze all, which I was very clear was never my plan).
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy

How was your experience with Eric Widra?
I almost never saw Dr. Widra. He has a protocol and wants no part of answering your questions or making any changes to that protocol for your preferences. He hated that I did research and had my own opinions. There are still questions he hasn't answered that his nurse promised he would call and answer. The one time he did call he only wanted to talk about the good news from our retrieval even though i had been pressing to have a conversation about the transfer protocol. When things when wrong he never cared to discuss why or what could be done differently or to resolve the issue.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
If you don't want to understand why decisions are being made or to have any input in your care, or to ever see your doc (which honestly didn't matter to me as long as i got the info i wanted) i suspect he would be a fine choice. But if you want information I would probably choose someone else.
Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I started with birth control which resulted in a cyst that we spent weeks watching grow (thankfully a PA suggested i push for a trigger shot to get rid of it!). After that i was on gonal-f 225 and 1 vial of menopur. After the first monitoring appointment they added cetrotide (1 injection) and doubled the menopur. I stimmed for 14 days (I think) then did a lupron trigger. My progesterone was too high for a fresh transfer so we had to do a freeze all. For the frozen transfer they tried birth control again, it didn't stop me from ovulating, which thankfully happened to coincide with our monitoring appointment and i got the natural-ish cycle i wanted. I did have to do progesterone suppositories (Dr. Widra refused to do the transfer without it and i was willing to give in since it was at least not the PIO injections).
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
You scheduled a generally time (I think they were done in 15 minute increments), you sign in and then it was a first come first serve for bloodwork and ultrasound. It was generally pretty well run and was usually timely (only once was it particularly long - a little over an hour) most times i would be out in under 30 minutes.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Widra.
I was lucky enough to have insurance coverage so the rate i paid was the rate negotiated by the insurance company.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
I really only have good things to say. The practice runs like a well oiled machine. They are efficient and effective.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Devine expressed empathy and spoke clearly to me- she would explain the medical terminology then break it down into more digestible language. She ALWAYS called me back same day and sometimes on weekends. She would occasionally just check in and the one time I needed some reassurance from her, she told me to come in right away. She was responsive and caring, but without being overly emotional or warm. She struck the right balance as my doctor.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Alison Loffredo was the best nurse of the three and I also dealt with her during my OHSS so it was a bit more complicated. She explained the test results well - what my results were and what the normal range was. While I had the OHSS, she was extremely responsive and checked in with me often.
How was your experience with Kate Devine?
I was under Dr. Devine's care for over a year. At every step she would lay out the plan then we would talk it through. After a surprisingly unsuccessful first IVF, we regrouped and she presented a new plan. When that plan didn't work, I asked if she would ask other SGF doctors what they thought. I thought I was being a little pushy and that she might have felt that I was losing confidence in her. I wasn't, I just wanted a little additional reassurance. She did exactly as I asked and called me to discuss their thoughts as well as her own. When she presented her own opinion, I felt even more confident because she had the input of her colleagues. She was very responsive and supportive, but struck the right balance as my doctor. Even after two failed cycles, she said, "we will keep going and we will get this to work." When I had a successful third cycle that produced 2 genetically normal embryos, I asked for her guidance in whether or not to do another cycle. She gave me really helpful advice and I decided to do another cycle to produce more embryos. I was glad that I did. One of the things I liked most about Dr. Devine is that when I was frustrated, she was frustrated and when I was successful, she felt successful. We worked as a team and I have a high degree of trust in Dr. Devine and the entire practice.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kate Devine?
Dr. Devine is direct but nice. She isn't a hand holder, so when she gives you information, think carefully about what questions you need to ask to feel comfortable. She has all the information for you, but you need to be proactive in sharing it and also expressing how you are feeling about the process. Don't be afraid to speak up. I felt that Dr. Devine was most effective in the times that I was struggling, nervous, or unhappy. If you ask for help and guidance, she will absolutely provide it, but she is cautious to not assume what you need from her.
Describe the protocols Kate Devine used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Cycle 1- standard protocol, Menopur and Gonal F, Lupron trigger (suggested because my test results were very good). This cycle produced 1 embryo that did not implant. Cycle 2- Lupron microdose flare- suggested for poor responders. Still not a great response, only 1 embryo that did not transfer. Cycle 3- high dose Menopur, Gonal F, and HCG trigger. Worked much better and produced 2 PGS normal embryos, unfortunately, I developed OHSS. Cycle 4- same protocol as #3, slightly lower HCG. Great results. 4 PGS normal embryos.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
In all of the monitoring appointments for four cycle, I only had one time where I had to wait for a while and it was on a weekend at 9am, when patient load is heavy. This part is well run.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kate Devine.
I was able to squeeze insurance coverage for 3 cycles and paid for one out of pocket ($15,500 for IVF with ICSI and a FET).

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I went through 9 cycles of various treatments with Dr. Widra. During my 7th cycle, I had an ectopic pregnancy that eventually ended up rupturing (not the fault of Dr. Widra or Shady Grove fertility). Dr. Widra called me from out-of-town to express his disappointment about the ectopic pregnancy and then called me again when he learned that I had emergency surgery to deal with the ruptured ectopic. That really impressed me. Additionally, Dr. Widra always treated me well and like a human during office appointments and monitoring appointments. I never felt like he didn't care.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I can not say enough good things about my nurses at Shady Grove (Carrie Andrews and before her Sarah Evans). So on top of things, organized, caring....they both had all of the qualities that you would want in a nurse and never, ever let me down. And in the case of Sarah, we worked together for 8 cycles over 1.5 years and I threw so many issues at her, and she always responded quickly and thoughtfully. I only worked with Carrie for 1 (successful) cycle, but she also displayed these same qualities, which I am sure would have continued had I needed additional treatments or cycles.
How was your experience with Eric Widra?
I went through 9 cycles of various treatments with Dr. Widra (the last two of which resulted in ongoing pregnancies spaced two years apart). Also, Dr. Widra never cancelled one of my cycles. Even if it looked like I might be maturing too many follicles (during timed intercourse cycles), Dr. Widra would adjust the medications and I was able to trigger with every cycle. I can't say enough good things about my experience with Dr. Widra and Shady Grove.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
It can take some time to get an appointment with Dr. Widra, so if you want to start treatment in May, think about calling for a May appointment in Feb or March. In my experience, thought, this was only true for initial appointments; once I was undergoing treatment, I had appointments with Dr. Widra that we scheduled only a week or two out.
Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles and their degree of success.
My treatment for my first child was primarily dictated by the requirements of my insurance company (which provided coverage for IVF, but only if I tried a certain number of timed intercourse and IUI cycles first). But within those requirements, Dr. Widra first had me go through 2 cycles of timed intercourse with clomid and progesterone suppositories, and then switched me to injectibles (Bravelle) and progesterone suppositories when I had vision issues with clomid (I wasn't taking a high dose). Then I went through 4 cycles of timed intercourse with injectibles to fulfill my insurance requirements, and an IUI cycle with injectibles (Bravelle) and progesterone suppositories again to fulfill insurance requirements. The IUI resulted in an ectopic pregnancy that Shady Grove quickly treated, but still ended up rupturing and requiring emergency surgery. After that point, I was finally allowed to proceed to IVF, which produced two 5-day blasts (using Bravelle, menopur, HGH, estradiol, and endometrin) . One was using during that first cycle (and resulted in my son) and the other was frozen for future use. I did end up with over-stimulated ovaries, but I don't think this was the result of Dr. Widra being too aggressive with treatment (as I didn't end up with dozens of retrieved eggs), but is just something that happened. Shady Grove treated me with a blood thinner and an outpatient procedure to drain fluid. A year after my son was born, I went through a frozen embryo transfer with Dr. Widra using the embryo that was produced during my previous IVF cycle (as well as a combination of endometrin, PIO injections, and estradiol injections). This cycle was also successful and (fingers crossed) my daughter will be born in May 2016.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Widra.
8 (including one IUI and one IVF) of my 9 cycles were covered by insurance, and I never had any cost or billing issues. My 9th cycle was paid out-of-pocket, but the fees were fair for the procedure and I was able to participate in a research study that lowered my costs (without degrading my care)

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
It can be hard to feel a lot of personal attention at Shady Grove. Shady Grove is a huge practice. I believe I read somewhere they do more IVF procedures than anywhere in the country. So sometimes it can feel like a bit of a factory. I felt comfort in that because I knew they had tons of experience. I didn't need personal attention as much as I needed to know that the doctors knew how to get results! However, when it became clear that my case was more complicated, I felt that I got the more personal attention I needed. Dr. Widra brought me and my husband in for a special meeting to talk next steps and a plan. I also felt that at every step of the way, when I had questions or concerns, someone was there to answer them.

Carrie was an absolute dream. She was kind and compassionate, responsive and reassuring. She was extremely knowledgeable and set my mind at ease.

How was your experience with Eric Widra?
I had very positive experiences with Dr. Widra. He does not have a "warm and fuzzy" personality, but he is still very sensitive. He conveys information and options in a very clear, direct but yet very compassionate way. When we went in for an 8 week sonogram after our first IVF treatment, he found that there had been a miscarriage. He handled the situation extremely well, and made us feel very supported and comforted.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
Dr. Widra has a more direct style, though he is still compassionate and sensitive. Also, he does not give out his email address (as some REs do) so all your questions will go through a nurse.

Shady Grove is kind of run like a factory, but I think there are totally upsides to that depending on what you are being treated for...I think the doctors, nurses, and other staff there really know what they are doing and you get great care overall. Everything is convenient and efficient. However, if you want your hand held by a specific doctor, this is not the place to go....I would say that the nurses are highly variable. ...Shady Grove is really good about preparing you for the costs of things in general.

I am happy with Shady Grove because I did a successful cycle of IVF there and I feel like they have adapted well to my evolving situation (moving to New York, involving another doctor, moving onto a gestational carrier).
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
It is so hard to review doctors when you are still in the process of being treated by them and don't know what will result! Things I like about Dr. Devine: she always takes the time to talk to you extensively about results (good and bad) and about the prognosis. She is really, really good at setting expectations (low ones in my situation). She is the first doctor who said I might need a gestational carrier and I was actually able to hear that. HOWEVER, Shady Grove is kind of run like a factory, but I think there are totally upsides to that depending on what you are being treated for. So I do sometimes feel like a number there. It's not a warm and fuzzy place. But I'm in a spot with my fertility issues where I don't really need warm and fuzzy right now. I just need the care to be good and I do think Shady Grove has an excellent lab. One thing to watch for is that you have a ton of access to nurses and other ancillary staff at Shady Grove but it can be hard to schedule time to actually talk to your doctor. On the other hand, I don't really need to talk to my doctor all of the time now anyway. I am not having any medical emergencies, etc. Mixed feelings. But yes, when I talk to Dr. Devine, she treats me very much like a human.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
I would say that the nurses are highly variable. I had a few nurses who were absolutely amazing (Sheila Ormond, most notably). They are so responsive and compassionate and because of how the practice is run you end up interacting with them a lot and they really know and understand your situation. However, it's uneven - I randomly had a nurse for a few weeks during a time when I was doing outside monitoring who was unresponsive and had no idea what was going on with my case. She got re-assigned (perhaps after I complained, though I'm not sure). I now have a gestational carrier coordinator who seems great. But yeah, I would say it's variable. The nice thing about a "factory" place is that because of the sheer volume of nurses, you can probably complain and get re-assigned easily to someone really good.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Provided conflicting information
How was your experience with Kate Devine?
Dr. Devine is not warm and fuzzy, as noted above. But she is really really good at setting expectations and I appreciate that. I went to her to preserve my fertility because I had a difficult time getting and being pregnant with my first child. That evolved into me actually trying to get pregnant with a second child - this has not happened yet and we've moved onto getting a gestational carrier and will be working with Shady Grove to do this. We decided it would be a good idea to create embryos right away after having our first child (in part because my insurance actually covered it and I had the time). I got amazing results from the one IVF cycle that I did at Shady Grove: 28 eggs retrieved, 24 were mature, 21 fertilized, 16 made it to day 5 embryos and were frozen, and 8 were genetically normal (2 of the 16 were re-biopsed because they didn't get conclusive results and one was normal and the other was not). That was awesome. However, during the IVF cycle, we discovered that I had "Asherman's Syndrome" still or again - I had it before my first child was born but thought it was treated. It either wasn't totally treated or it recurred from a c-section. We then discovered that even when the scars sticking the sides of the uterus were cleared I still seem to have an abnormally thin lining that tends to collect fluid during treatments that raise my estrogen level - there seems to be a trade-off between thickening the lining and increasing the fluid. Neither of these things is good for implantation. Ugh. I've now had 3 more hysteroscopies since doing IVF (I had 3 prior to having my first child)and done 2 questionable transfers of genetically normal embryos to suboptimal lining conditions at Shady Grove (under the theory that I got pregnant before with a very thin lining - 4mm). My lining does not make it out of the 4mm range. We've now called it quits on the transfers and we are officially moving onto a gestational carrier, as noted above. Dr. Devine actually thought I should go straight to a GC the first time I met with her based on the trauma of my first pregnancy (di-tri triplets, multi-fetal pregnancy reduction, debilitating nausea, intrauterine growth restriction, c-section at 36 weeks and 3 pound 11 ounce baby). But I insisted on trying again to get pregnant. I am calling it quits because it's been 4 years of infertility taking over my life, more than 5 different fertility doctors (not to mention the other ob/gyns and MFMs involved), 2 miscarriages, 2 partial ovarian torsions, 1 botched D&C, 1 multi-fetal pregnancy reduction, 1 c-section, 1 amazing baby with scary terrible pregnancy, 6 hysteroscopies, 2 unsuccessful frozen embryo transfers, and countless random doctors and nurses telling me that my uterus doesn't look good on ultrasound. I can honestly say that the least stressful part of this whole experience was actually my IVF cycle at Shady Grove. That was a total nothing. Worked out great. Can't ask for better results.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kate Devine?
If you want someone warm and fuzzy, I would not go to Dr. Devine. If you want someone who will be straight with you, Dr. Devine is amazing. I must tell you that because of how Shady Grove works, you end up seeing whoever is there that day so I didn't always see Dr. Devine. She will call you to follow up but sometimes it's not at a convenient time for you so you end up relying on what other doctors and nurses are saying. This is not a problem with Dr. Devine; this is more just about how the Shady Grove practice works. Everything is high quality, but you don't get your hand held by one person. You have A LOT of access to your nurse, but not as much access to your doctor.
Describe the protocols Kate Devine used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I actually don't remember the specifics of the drugs I took for my one IVF cycle with Dr. Devine. She was concerned about over-stimulating me (I have PCOS and am very responsive to fertility drugs and have had partial ovarian torsion twice). She managed to maximize the number of mature eggs while not over-stimulating me which was great. The rationale for doing IVF was to preserve my fertility since I was 36, my insurance covered it, and I had a hard time conceiving my first child due to Asherman's Syndrome. It's now totally awesome that we have the embryos because we are pursuing a gestational carrier. Okay, here's the complicated thing that happened while I saw Dr. Devine: I wanted to get a hysteroscopy from my old doctor in San Francisco because he had already performed 2 hysteroscopies. I went to him in December of 2016. On hysteroscopy, he thought my uterus looked pretty good and put me on an estrogen therapy protocol. Every single time I went in to have my lining checked at Shady Grove during the estrogen therapy protocol, the lining was still really thin and my California doctor thought I should keep taking the estrogen. Dr. Devine didn't think the estrogen therapy was working. I went with the California doctor's advice because he had helped me in the past and I had had a successful pregnancy. Dr. Devine might be right that it wasn't working. I don't really know. Anyway, I did the estrogen therapy for 3 months. Then I did two unsuccessful frozen embryo transfers. Both cycles were really confusing because my lining didn't look great (still thin and fluid-filled), I was in the process of moving to New York City and was doing outside monitoring and seeing random clinicians for the measurements/assessments of my uterine lining. I would take a picture on my phone of the image of my uterus and send it to Dr. Devine's nurse because outside monitoring does not actually send the images (just a written report). I don't even know what to say about that experience. Outside monitoring is just a really really terrible experience if you have a uterine lining problem. It was terrible but not because of anything Dr. Devine did. She was very clear about the likelihood of success with these transfers not being great (as mentioned above, she is very good about setting expectations - and in my case, setting them low). This all prompted me to actually get another doctor in New York City. This New York doctor partnered really well with Dr. Devine and that was great. They knew, liked, and respected each other and I felt like I was in much better hands once that occurred. I really wish someone at Shady Grove had encouraged me to actually see a doctor in New York sooner (and not just do outside monitoring). I only got another doctor because I took the initiative. The nurse at Shady Grove made it seem like it was no big deal to do outside monitoring and let me tell you it really really was for me. It was expensive, time-consuming, and frustrating.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kate Devine.
They weren't too bad. My insurance actually covered a round of IVF so that was minimal cost. We also had a physician discount of 20% (my husband is a physician) on other procedures. The thing that was really expensive was actually the outside monitoring that I did in New York City. So be prepared for that. Shady Grove is really good about preparing you for the costs of things in general. But I was not prepared for the cost of outside monitoring.

Call backs [at Shady Grove] were generally very late. It was nerve-wracking, because often you wouldn't get a call back until after phone lines closed - which made it difficult if you didn't get one to get ahold of someone...Nurses were hit or miss. Staff as a whole was a bit hit or miss, though more good than bad. Appreciated the splitting of blood draws from general nurses (keeping it with people who knew what they were doing). I'd describe things as generally efficient, and well run, on the nursing side.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
I think the strength is in the solid lab, significant experience and range of doctors to choose from. They do seem to use standard protocols, but that was fine. I'm not crazy about the BCP use, but it's a must - there's not a lot of flexibility in that area. I was able to get some concessions on some policies by getting Dr. Moon on board, and it was frustrating to have to do so. The standard weekend hours and multiple locations was good - no worrying about timing there. They generally had a range of appointments available, though weekends could be hit or miss. Some things were very standardized which generally helped it run smoothly. But there were times things backed up, with waits of 45+ minutes. The financial people may have changed in the past 2 years, but that was the worst/most maddening part. It may be less so if you're not using insurance, but I had to do a significant amount of leg work on running down pre-authorizations and getting statuses and poking and prodding. It was incredibly frustrating, and I would say that's the part that is most off putting about the clinic.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Shady Grove is a bit of a factory, yes, but I felt like Dr. Moon individually took sufficient time to meet with me, answer my questions, go over my past history (and abysmal results) and talk about options. She personally called with the information on transfer day, which I greatly appreciated. She was great during appointments as well.

Nurses were hit or miss. Staff as a whole was a bit hit or miss, though more good than bad. Appreciated the splitting of blood draws from general nurses (keeping it with people who knew what they were doing). I'd describe things as generally efficient, and well run, on the nursing side.

  • Failed to call with results
How was your experience with Kimberly Moon?
I'm a fan - I imagine success has something to do with it, but the overall experience was good. I knew by the time I got to Dr. Moon that I was going to struggle conceiving, and that it wasn't for any identifiable reason. That helped temper my expectations I think. I thought she was reasonably realistic (given my numbers that gave no reason to think my results should be abysmal), and confident without being arrogant. I know I asked lots of questions at times, and all were answered patiently.
Describe the protocols Kimberly Moon used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Standard antagonist protocol - BCP followed by FSH, menopur and then cetrotide I think. Attempting to keep growth slow but steady, and keep all follicles in range. Aiming for fewer high quality follicles (as someone who could produce a fair number, but of poor quality). Standard trigger criteria, but we held off a day or two based on history, so things were slightly larger. On my FET, it was medicated, so BCP and then something (can't recall).
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kimberly Moon.
Insurance covered in large part, so I don't recall.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady Grove has very convenient offices and flexible hours, which makes it convenient for pursuing fertility. However I think they could do more to customize for patients over 35 by having protocols set up for these patients.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
You always had to go through a nurse. And I was always having to suggest what should be done next. I should not have to manage the doctor. He should be up to date on research.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Carrie was a wonderful nurse, but Eric Widra would have her call me instead of talking to me himself. He was reactive and uncomfortable approaching patients.
How was your experience with Eric Widra?
He is defensive and not open to listening to his patients. The whole time I had to push him to try something different. One cycle I called him a couple of times to let him know I felt the cycle was not going well, and he told me he thought it was going fine. I ended up with only one embryo. The next cycle he increased my meds I got four embryos. If he would have listened during the first cycle then I may not have need a second cycle.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
Do not expect him to be proactive.
Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles and their degree of success.
IVF and frozen eggs and genetic testing of embryos. He insisted on doing frozen cycles until I pushed him into freezing the eggs and genetic testing of embryos. I did not want to continually go through miscarriages, and I had one previously. Not sure why he would have ever suggested fresh IVF cycle for anyone over 40.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
Shady grove is fairly efficient with appointments and flexible. They have improved their scheduling and monitoring hours by opening up additional clinics to help with traffic.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Widra.
All costs at shady grove are fairly uniform across.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I appreciate that Dr. Moon treats me like a fellow adult with intelligence and agency over my care. I never felt that she was condescending to me. I also get the impression that she tailors the information provided to her patients according to the amount of detail they desire.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Kate is so on top of her game! She gets back to me almost instantaneously whenever I have questions or concerns, and she's generally able to anticipate issues before they arise.
How was your experience with Kimberly Moon?
Dr. Moon is extremely efficient (i.e. brisk in her manner), but she's also extremely thorough and approachable. She shared early on that she went through IVF to conceive her own children, so she's able to empathize. I found her to be warm, friendly, and willing to answer as many questions as I could throw at her.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kimberly Moon?
You're in good hands! Let her know early on if you're the type of patient who wants to know the nitty-gritty of treatment details, as she tends to only offer information about the very next step unless you request more detail.
Describe the protocols Kimberly Moon used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I was "old" (37 at first consult, 40 at treatment) with mixed signs of diminished ovarian reserve. Dr. Moon recommended (and used) an estrogen priming protocol. Still in the stims phase of my first IVF cycle, but so far the response is approximately what she predicted (i.e. not many eggs, but we weren't expecting many).

I should have had like 6 treatments. After the first one they started sending me bills for every little thing. When I inquired about it they claim that that was not what plan I was under and that I was a pay as you go pt. Meanwhile I provide them with all of the correspondance with my financial guy and got no where. They would not budge.

Many times when I would go in for my blood draws or scans there was only standing room because there were so many patients. It was very impersonal. Everyone there is nervous and scared and possibly desperate and they just chat about whats for lunch and what they did for the weekend. Very insensitive.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Jennifer was very organized but she would mainly communicate via email. If you called you would never get an answer. When I was actively going through a miscarriage she never once said sorry or showed any sympathy she only told me to calm down

How was your experience with Kimberly Moon?
Dr. Moon overall was a nice lady. I am a nurse and understood many of the things that were going on but my husband did not and he always felt dismissed. I saw her on my initial consultation and one other time. She did take time to come and give me an ultrasound while the regular staff was at lunch and I was having a miscarriage. Other than that she never performed one procedure. I saw a variety of other dr's. She did call after my miscarriage and I explained to her a complacation that I was having and she brushed me off. I had to be seen at an urgent care. She never even called after my failed transfer
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kimberly Moon?
Ask a lot of questions ans do not expect much
Describe the protocols Kimberly Moon used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I did a round of drugs for egg retrieval (injections, pills and vaginal suppository). Had a "practice" egg insertion, the actually incantation and then a frozen transfer. During the frozen cycle I participated in a clinical trial.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I find Dr. Moon very personable and honest, which is great. Sometimes the small niceties are missing -- e.g., once I had a retrieval on my birthday and no one noticed, even though they asked me my birth date multiple times and the current date was written down everywhere, LOL.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I don't remember many specifics, but I always found everyone friendly, empathetic, and caring.
How was your experience with Kimberly Moon?
Dr. Moon is very open and a candid communicator. She was honest about whether she thought I should pursue treatment, and when one cycle wasn't going well, she was honest about whether she thought I should cancel or not. I really appreciate the fact that every time I talk to her, I know I'm hearing exactly what she thinks about my situation.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kimberly Moon?
I would just say good luck with the treatment! There are definitely no worries or concerns about Dr. Moon herself.
Describe the protocols Kimberly Moon used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I don't remember all the details of my retrieval, but I think the procedures were pretty standard. I used Bravelle (+ one other drug I'm not remembering), standard trigger shots (only one intramuscular), and never had any problems recovering from the actual retrievals.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kimberly Moon.
I remember that I got 4 cycles/20 eggs for $12k + med costs. There was a refund if you only did one (or maybe two) cycle(s), but since I didn't take that option I don't remember the details.

I think Shady Grove has a high quality lab and has high success due to this. The rest of the operation is large, I felt like a # and they had several major errors during my time there--for example failing to get an ultrasound on my egg donor on her last visit so they had her trigger without all of the necessary info. The RE who handled my transfer was awful and I worried that he purposely botched my transfer due to his attitude. In the end, I luckily got pregnant that cycle and was done with any fertility treatments.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I specifically sought out Dr. Moon on the recommendation of others due to the large size of the clinic and the factory feel of the operation. She was kind, listened to my story, helped me pick an egg donor, and was very responsive when I had an issue with the RE that handled my transfer.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
I had very little experience with the nursing staff due to using DE. The staff who were around during my transfer were fine.

How was your experience with Kimberly Moon?
Dr. Moon was used to working with SMCs and was recommended to me. She reviewed my file and gave me plenty of time to talk about my history and the potential options at her clinic. I knew what I wanted to do and she was quick to help me figure out next steps and also worked hard to help me determine which donor was the right one for me.
Describe the protocols Kimberly Moon used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I got pregnant on my first DE transfer so I didn't have a rigorous protocol.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kimberly Moon.
I chose a guaranteed DE program and it was expensive. I think the cost was $30,500. I've tried to block out the cost but my daughter was well worth the money!

I had a few care coordinators [at Shady Grove], and generally they were fine. They have a hard job, managing emotionally challenging situations, calling with highly anticipated test results. But admittedly I never felt a real connection with any of them. I understand that that may be a lot to ask....Functionally competent, efficient, solid customer service....He was direct and compassionate when there was bad news. I appreciated his sense of humor, which he used adeptly and with sensitivity. It helped me keep a sense of perspective when things looked bleak. He did not make promises that weren't his to keep and he was helpful at managing our expectations.

It helped me keep a sense of perspective when things looked bleak. He did not make promises that weren't his to keep and he was helpful at managing our expectations.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I had a few care coordinators, and generally they were fine. They have a hard job, managing emotionally challenging situations, calling with highly anticipated test results. But admittedly I never felt a real connection with any of them. I understand that that may be a lot to ask.
How was your experience with Eric Widra?
My wife and I were clear that we wanted to get pregnant with IUI and if it wasn't going to happen, we thought we would accept that. It took almost 2 years to get pregnant the first time and Dr Widra respected our wishes and did not once attempt to push us into a different course of treatment, even though his #1 objective as a reproductive endocrinologist, is to get women pregnant as quickly as possible. I continue to be very grateful for that.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
he treated us honestly and respectfully - like adults who don't need to be coddled - and while we certainly had some challenges, we now have 2 healthy kids. I'm not sure what else I can say. So much of this journey is out of our control.
Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles and their degree of success.
As I mentioned previously, we were patient with wanting to get pregnant with IUIs. I had 2 miscarriages before my daughter was born. I was given choices on how to conclude the miscarriages. Those choices were respected. After each, some test was proposed to see if there was an identifiable reason. There wasn't. And eventually I got pregnant.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Widra.
2 IUIs per cycle at $395 each, I think. My insurance did not pay for IUIs. Bloodwork, D&C, HSG we're all covered.

The waiting room [at Shady Grove on K Street] is very crowded and that can get a little awkward. But they were always prompt with all of the appointments. They were great about squeezing me in the time I thought I was having a miscarriage. Ultimately I am glad that we made the choice to go here. I liked the injection class they taught - very useful and helpful.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady Grove is very well-run. It's very organized. It is convenient - there are multiple locations, and I could go to different locations for blood draws or ultrasounds if a certain one was closer (i.e., if I was doing errands on a Saturday in Baltimore, I could go to a MD location and they'd do the work and have the results.) The waiting room is very crowded and that can get a little awkward. But they were always prompt with all of the appointments. They were great about squeezing me in the time I thought I was having a miscarriage. Ultimately I am glad that we made the choice to go here. I liked the injection class they taught - very useful and helpful.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
She was a good but impersonal doctor. She definitely explained the process fully, but I didn't see her except when there was something major to discuss (like a negative pregnancy test.)
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Heidi was a great nurse - she was extremely attentive and communicative during the process. She was very responsive to any emails I sent and answered all questions quickly.
How was your experience with Barbara Osborn?
She is a very knowledgeable doctor. I would describe her as clinical; meaning that she knows a lot but is always thinking about the medical side of things. I did not really feel like I could talk with her about the emotional part of the IVF process. I also didn't feel like I could ask questions about my treatment outside of any appointments we had. She did a good job and was cautious about treatment - she encouraged us to only implant a single perfect embryo on our first round, instead of automatically going for multiples. I would recommend her to someone who is knowledgeable about the process and doesn't need a lot of hand-holding.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Barbara Osborn?
Be assertive during your appointments with her and ask a lot of questions then, because I felt she was hard to talk with otherwise.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
It was crowded but organized. There was a sign in sheet and then you were called from it. The waits were not too bad considering the number of people being treated. Everybody was very efficient. They were also nice but not overly chatty or personal. I could get some quick questions answered, but mostly they referred me to my nurse, who was excellent about answering anything, and doing it quickly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Barbara Osborn.
Our insurance covered half of the care. We were told that our negotiated rate with our carrier (Kaiser) was the lowest of the insurance providers who covered fertility treatments. I think our costs were about $10k for the IVF with egg retrieval and about $5k for the second cycle of just the embryo transfer. This included all of my medication (purchase separately) and frozen embryo storage.

Shady Grove has good equipment and many locations... one front staff member is regularly rude to patients, expressing how clearly she did not want to be there or she did not want you there. That said, the blood draw staff, run by an excellent head nurse, were professional while also friendly. The nursing staff who performed my sedated HCG were disengaged with me as a human being. They tried to rush me out of the center, and I was not yet then able to stand without help.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady Grove has good equipment and many locations but there are some staffing challenges that likely relate it's set up as a baby making factory rather than a caring physician's office. In the Shady Grove location, one front staff member is regularly rude to patients, expressing how clearly she did not want to be there or she did not want you there. That said, the blood draw staff, run by an excellent head nurse, were professional while also friendly. The nursing staff who performed my sedated HCG were disengaged with me as a human being. They tried to rush me out of the center, and I was not yet then able to stand without help. Again, the facility is run like a baby-making machine and with machines this large, a few bad pieces will likely get in. I did officially complain about the staff's conduct for the HCG procedure. I was not told what resulting follow up there was but I hope some retraining was done.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Nair always made herself available to my questions and concerns. She battled me on issues she felt would optimize my chances at conception but often deferred to my decisions about my own health.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Morgan was the third nurse assigned me. The first quit the group abruptly. The second was rude and pushy and exhibited bullying behavior. I immediately requested a change from the nursing supervisor and Dr. Nair. I was then assigned Morgan. She was far more even keeled and respectful and more than willing to assist.

How was your experience with Anitha Nair?
Dr. Nair is knowledgeable, thoughtful, and takes time to listen to your thoughts. She understands the patient has authority over her own body. She was not as well located as I wished. Often I needed to visit the office where she wasn't practicing, but she just can't be at every location.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anitha Nair?
Explain your concerns. She will listen and try to work with you. She donor have the highest knowledge of holistic alternatives, but she won't shun that conversation. Most important, trust that wants you have a successful conception. Know yourself, educate yourself, and talk to her.
Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles and their degree of success.
The only pharmaceutical intervention I allowed was Levothyroxine to lower my thyroid levels. I am otherwise in very good health. I am not sure the intervention was necessary but I was persuaded to try. The doctors group would not allow my IUI attempt without that intervention although my thyroid levels were normal for a woman not attempting to conceive.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anitha Nair.
I paid approximately $150 for all services including my sedated HCG. Please note I have one of the best insurance plans out there.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Something to strongly consider when selecting a clinic is the quality of the embryologist and labs. Before I went through this process, I focused a lot on the doctor but having been through the process I now truly understand and appreciate the vital role the embryologist play in your IVF success. Once egg retrieval happens, they take over, carefully caring for each of the embryos and ensuring they develop properly. Also, I did acupuncture with Autumn at SGF throughout the cycle. She was so kind and knowledgeable. Each treatment I felt really helped me physically and emotionally and I would highly recommend it. On a personal note, I really appreciated that several members of my IVF team had been patients themselves. This allowed me to feel supported and understood during each phase. The only department at SGF I was not impressed with was the financial department. They were extremely disorganized and created a lot of unnecessary confusions in terms of treatments, cost, payments, etc. They tried to get me to pay for things that I didn't have to or had already paid for. Also, our insurance covered none of the treatment so we paid a lump sum for one IVF cycle. Despite the fact that all care was included, they billed my insurance for some of the appointments and procedures. I caught the claims and it was a headache to reverse but I felt it was so wrong for them to do that.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Nair was extremely compassionate and kind throughout the entire IVF process. She acknowledged the difficulties and discomforts. I felt that we were in great hands and I didn't have to micro manage the process. Though the personal and financial stakes where high, I fully and completely trusted her. When the outcome wasn't quite what was predicted (for example, the predictive model showed we would have four embryos at the end instead of two) she took my concerns into consideration and explained the results. Her gentle, kind, and compassionate demeanor really helped put me at ease and have full confidence in her and the team. She also knew I'd gone through a year of failed infertility treatments with a doctor (abroad) that I felt took our money knowing the treatments would fail. Knowing my sensitivities and distrust she paired me with Debbie Rice as my nurse, someone who was equality dependable, compassionate, and kind which really made it a smooth process.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Debbie Rice was absolutely wonderful! She was kind and compassionate and I really connected with her. I emailed and spoke to her by phone almost daily throughout the IVF process. She would give me very clear instructions and would explain if adjustments to my protocol were made and why. She also relayed questions I had to Dr. Nair or answered them when she could and even made me laugh, despite the insurmountable amount of stress I felt. She was gentle when she delivered the news about the final embryo count and allowed me to cry and process the news. I actually did not take a home pregnancy test in advance of the blood test following the transfer. When she delivered the news that I was pregnant it was a true surprise and I could tell she was reveling in our joy. She is amazing!

How was your experience with Anitha Nair?
I was extremely satisfied with the care we received at Shady Grove Fertility and Dr. Nair. Dr. Nair had actually come recommended from a friend of mine who had been her patient and is now the mother of beautiful twins. Dr. Nair sat down with us and walked us through their predictive model and what to expect. I felt she always had our best interest and safety in mind. For example, we were highly encouraged to only transfer one embryo. While we only ended up with two embryos at the end of the process, instead of the four that the model predicted, both were A++ embryos and the one transferred resulted in our beautiful baby boy. I felt jilted by the fertility experience after a year of failed treatments abroad resulting in no pregnancies. Dr. Nair's kind and compassionate demeanor immediately allowed me trust her and trust the IVF process with Shady Grove Fertility.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anitha Nair?
Don't ignore their pre-IVF checklist. I had been undergoing fertility treatments for a year abroad (in Hong Kong) resulting in no pregnancies. While my husband's sperm analysis results showed issues, our doctor in Hong Kong did not look into why. I happen to see that an appointment with a urologist was recommended so I scheduled one with Dr. Shin. Dr. Shin identified the issue - my husband had a varicocele. We decided to move forward with IVF while at the same time my husband had the surgery to correct it. We are hoping this will help with conceiving children naturally in the future. Also, ask as many questions as you need to until you feel comfortable moving forward with the IVF process. The stakes are high, both personally and financially, and Dr. Nair understands that.
Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I took 17 days of birth control pills and then started taking the IVF medications. I started with Gonal F 150 IU and Menopur 75 IU and went in for monitoring daily. Each day they would call me with the results and let me know how to proceed with my medication. Adjustments were made to the dosages. For example, at on monitoring session the blood tests showed a spike in my progesterone which caused them to adjust the medication down, until the levels went down, and then they adjusted the medication up again. I also had a cyst in one of my ovaries which impacted the growth of follicles on that side. I felt bloated as the follicles matured but otherwise ok. Once they were close to reaching maturity, I was given very specific instructions on how and when to take Cetrotide - the trigger shot. Egg retrieval was the only time I felt I had not been prepared as I was in a lot of pain following the procedure. Fortunately, I filled the pain medication prescription they gave me and that helped alleviate the pain. Throughout the whole treatment, I was in daily contact with my nurse, Debbie Rice, or a backup if she was out of the office. My questions and concerns were promptly responded to. I felt very well informed and always knew exactly what I needed to do.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anitha Nair.
We have Aetna insurance and they have negotiated rates with Shady Grove Fertility. Therefore, we paid $7,500 for the IVF cycle and about $3,000 for medication. I have to admit that one of the big draws to Shady Grove Fertility was the Shaded Risk Plan. After doing a lot of research and crunching numbers, we realized that it was not the right fit for us. One of the big reasons is because medication is not included. On top of the lump sum, you are paying $3-5k in medication for each cycle. Additionally, research indicated that they lean towards selecting couples for the program that have a higher chance of succeeding in the first cycle. Therefore, when they told us we were approved for the program I was hoping it was because they thought we'd be successful on the first cycle. It's a high stakes financial gamble where you have to hedge your bets. For some the program is worth it, for others it's not so do your research.

I love that the clinic [Shady Grove - DC K St] has 7 am monitoring hours. I am able to make these appointments while being only minimally late for work. I also like that you can be in and out in the morning without long forms to fill or people to meet with during monitoring....I ask a lot of questions and because I have VERY limited access to my Doctor, many of the ppl I am asking are nurses or Ultrasound tech or PA's. So depending on who I ask I get a totally different answer.

I love that the clinic has 7 am monitoring hours. I am able to make these appointments while being only minimally late for work. I also like that you can be in and out in the morning without long forms to fill or people to meet with during monitoring. The staff keeps the flow of patients moving quickly. The clinic is closed at 4 and for an hour midday for lunch (12-1) I think given its high capacity functioning and sheer number of patients, it should be open for scheduling and calls during the lunch hour. It should also close at 5 (6 even). Other than the morning monitoring hours, the rest of the day's schedule isn't very convenient.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I feel that Dr. Devine treats me like a human being. When she was forced to cancel my first IUI cycle due to over-stimulation she called me personally to tell me and to go over next steps. Since I was paying completely out of pocket she was able to work with me to do my next IUI at no cost, even the meds were provided for me. I really appreciated this gesture.

How was your experience with Kate Devine?
Dr. Devine is very knowledgeable in her field of practice. It is clear that she wants results and hold herself to high standards. She is direct and no-nonsense while still offering hope and I really appreciate this quality in a doctor. Because of these strengths I found it really disappointing that I had almost no contact with her. I had much more contact with the nurse assigned to me-Sheila Ormond who is a phenomenal nurse and support to me during my cycles. When I walked in for my first IUI cycle I was dismayed to see a woman I had never met. I asked her where my doctor was and she said that Dr. Devine would not be performing my IUI. I really wanted to see Dr. Devine and get her real time insights on my cycle. Same thing during my 2nd IUI cycle. Doctor Devine was nowhere in sight. I was assigned a Physicians Assistant who did the IUI. During my 2nd cycle I ran into some complications --my trigger shot did not work! I was sure of it and I needed to speak to Dr. Devine desperately. The nurses did not seem concerned by my pleas to speak with her. They told me that they would handle it and that I should speak to her through them. At that point I reminded them that I am a self-pay patient and I deserved to speak with my doctor. After several hours, she called and we talked at length and she was able to devise a new plan of action. Again, I respect Dr. Devine and her expertise and it is this respect that I have for her that leaves me wanting more contact with her, especially during a complicated cycle.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kate Devine?
Have all of your questions written down in advance. She does a great job answering them but you must offer them. If not, she keeps it short and sweet. Also feel free to contribute your thoughts and ideas, after all you are an expert on your own body. She is willing to work with patients when devising treatment plans.
Describe the protocols Kate Devine used in your cycles and their degree of success.
1st cancelled IUI cycle protocol: Clomid 100 mg CD 2-7, Gonal -F 75 CD7-9, trigger, vaginal prometrium 200 mg twice a day. Result: cancelled due to overstim 2nd IUI Cycle: Femera CD 2-7, Menopur CD 7-8, HCG trigger,Estrace due to thin lining, prometrium 200 mg twice a day. Result BFN 3rd Cycle: Femera CD 2-7, Menopur CD 7-8, HCG trigger (trigger failed), 2nd trigger novarel administered intramuscular, Estrace due to thin lining on femera, prometrium 200 mg twice a day. Result TBD I was started out on a high dose protocol due to an elevated day 3FSH, I overstimmed and I also had strange visual side effects with the clomid so I was switched to femera. Not sure why I was switched to menopur but my nurse said something about it being helpful to my lining? (not sure whether that is coming from any real wisdom or if it was a way to get me to stop asking questions) I was switched to novarel trigger during my 3rd cycle because I did not respond to the Ovidrel.

Due to a high patient volume [at Shady Grove Fertility], it felt like many people were given the same protocol and there wasn't much outside of the box thinking for a tougher case. Bedside manner was very matter of fact, and advice was very standard. It felt like if your numbers weren't as high as some other clients you would be automatically directed to donor eggs. I very much felt like just another number here, and not like a person.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
The refund plan they offer is a great deal if you happen to qualify and I can get why so many patients flock to this location. Financial department is a mess to deal with, they always seemed to give different numbers, and on one occasion I had a phone call scheduled with them and they never called me and didn't really offer an explanation/apology. It became very frustrating to deal with them. They from time to time didn't provide me with an accurate representation of what my insurance would cover as I later found out through working with a different clinic.

How was your experience with Eric Widra?
I often got the feeling that my case was too complicated. I was made to feel like I was a set of illnesses, rather than a patient that was trying to conceive. It was very unclear after the first visit what I was supposed to do, as clear instructions weren't really given. I felt like just another number, and I really didn't feel confident in the care I was receiving. I didn't try switching doctors, it felt like that would achieve similar results. Instead I switched clinics.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
Go in educated on your possible options, things are explained very quickly so you'll want to try to familiarize yourself with some terms if possible. Also bring a notebook and pen so you can take good notes. If you're using this practice expect it to feel like a cattle call, and don't expect much personalized attention. Be your own best advocate.
Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I did not get to the point of a cycle as it was uncertain what option the doctor felt was best to use. I could have proceed with donor eggs, or waited to see if they could figure out my case. If I proceeded with my own eggs an antagonist protocol was mentioned, with BCP to start. It was a frustrating experience as we hadn't even done my day 3 labs yet, and already I felt very dismissed.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Widra.
Initial visit and initial testing were covered though i never made it to the initial testing. I want to say my husband's SA was around 300$. The shared risk cycle would have been 22,500 plus medication and a banking cycle was an additional 7500$ or so plus medication cost. Though to be honest how the financial counselor laid out the expenses was very confusing and she kept giving me different numbers.

She never rushed us through explanations and treated us with compassion. She scheduled an extra ultrasound at 9-10 weeks during her limited free time, even though "officially" I was ready to be passed off to my normal OBGYN at that point. That assuaged many of my fears at the time.

Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We were prepared to begin IVF with PGD but became pregnant (again) -- naturally -- just before that cycle would have started. We did one last round of testing based on some new information I had researched relating to the MTHFR genetic mutation. Turned out I had such a mutation and I was put on a prescription folate ASAP (worrisome, because I was already a tiny bit pregnant when I started the folate and didn't know if we had discovered the problem fast enough). I also used progesterone suppositories (as I had under my OBGYN for my prior two miscarriages) during the first trimester. I had weekly ultrasounds and blood work to confirm the advancing pregnancy.

I rate the Nursing staff low. I rate dr Osborn high because of her bedside manner and interest in answering questions. I rate the administrative staff very low. Some are nasty. Most are unfriendly. You have to advocate for what you want/need and sometimes demand it from the administrative staff. In my case, I had to hold Shady Grove accountable for their responsibility in a contract and they were trying not to do it.

In general, most nurses at shady grove were pressed for time, didn't like to answer questions, were not authorized to answer certain questions and weren't compassionate in my opinion.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to convey critical information
How was your experience with Barbara Osborn?
She is compassionate. She was also direct in providing answers to my questions. I never felt rushed with her like I did for the other 3 doctors I had worked with. I felt like she made time for me and didn't treat me like a number like other doctors have done.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Barbara Osborn?
Ask whatever questions you have. It's difficult to get a hold of her and most other doctors at most clinics by phone. When they do call back, it could be when you're in a meeting or otherwise unavailable. Not many doctors will give out their direct phone number.
Describe the protocols Barbara Osborn used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I was on heavy doses to build up my uterine lining. I was on injectible lovenox as a blood thinner.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
While they see a lot of patients, I found them still attentive to me needs. I had a pretty straightforward case however, so that might have helped.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Widra was clear and patient with us. He was very compassionate when your first pregnancy, after an IUI, ended in a missed AB.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
She was responsive and kind.
How was your experience with Eric Widra?
Dr. Widra was frank and straightforward while also being patient and understanding. He cited studies and had ample evidence to support the decisions we made. We felt well cared for working with him. He was clear and concise which appealed to me and my husband.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
Ask questions when you need to.
Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I'm afraid I don't remember the specifics here.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
I was able to schedule for a general time, and was usually seen reasonable close to that scheduled time. If running late and I needed to get to an appointment elsewhere, they were able to accommodate my needs.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Widra.

Dr. Kimberly Moon was very warm and caring with my wife and I. She was patient and very good in helping us achieve every necessary step to move forward with our journey.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Every time we had questions or sent emails to Katie she would get back to us right away and remained engaged with us.
How was your experience with Kimberly Moon?
Doctor Moon was a total professional with my wife and I. As this procedure is already delicate and somewhat stressful for my wife and I, Dr. Moon remained engaged, very attentive and absolutely patient with us.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kimberly Moon?
Be prepared to have your mind as ease with Dr. Moon and her wonderful staff

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
They did not get to know me as a human, but they didn't confuse me with other patients. My nurse switched twice over the course of my treatment, and since in Dr. Widra's practice the RNs are the primary points of contact for a patient, those transitions affected my experience.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
At SGF, the nurses are the primary caregivers. In general, they are good nurses. They are caring and organized. That said, because the nurses are the primary points of contact for patients, any turnover on the nursing team is more challenging for patients than it would be if Dr. Widra managed the relationships on his panel more closely. This was my experience.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to send your chart to another clinic
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Provided conflicting information
How was your experience with Eric Widra?
Dr. Widra is a matter-of-fact communicator who tries to present a balanced view of options with accompanying benefits and risks. He is not very warm, but he's jovial and seems to care about his patients. Dr. Widra is very very busy, and as his patient, I felt rushed in communicating with him.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
Know that even though he's not the warmest and seems very busy/rushed, he does care. Be prepared to have your primary relationship be with the nurses.

old standard conservative methods- resistant to alternatives. Acupuncture and yoga are now being encouraged. When I had mentioned it during my cycle, I was told that it wouldn't make a difference . Older patients should really seek elsewhere for treatment.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Eventhough my hormone levels and AMH were that of a younger person, my protocol was not tailored for a person of advanced age and I feel the "standard" protocols I was going through possibly fried my eggs, hence further issues with egg quality. I kept insisting for other options and it wasn't considered at all.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
There were issues in the beginning but overall I think it she was better.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call with results
How was your experience with Kimberly Moon?
Treated me as if I was a younger patient. I am older, so treatments selection may have been too harsh on my eggs. She adjusted protocol which yielded more, poor quality eggs. She didn't listen to my concerns and my money went down the drain along with precious time.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kimberly Moon?
IF you're older, find someone else. If you're younger, you may stand a chance conceiving.

SGF is sort of factory but good in that monitoring is easy. Lots of open times for monitoring and SGF is a 24/7 facility, so that makes scheduling easy and good for getting answers. During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr.Widra has a very straightforward manner that I appreciated. He doesn't do a lot of hand holding, which I didn't need. He also doesn't do a lot of the communication, which I would have preferred. His nurse, however, is very reachable and excellent. I had a complication during my ivf stimulation and Dr. Widra was really great about it.

How was your experience with Eric Widra?
I'm still in treatment with Dr. Widra. It has been a frustrating process for things outside his control. However, he has been the best at the worst times, meaning when things have gone off course he has been attentive and sympathetic.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
Don't expect to see a lot of him or have him at all your monitoring. However, his approach is great and he is amenable to your perspective and feedback.
Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We tried iui but I ovulated before we could actually do the procedure (due to monitoring problems related to fibroids). For ivf, I did a course of birth control, then follistim and menopur, then added in ganirilex.

How was your experience with Eric Widra?
Dr Widra is an experienced professional, willing to take older women who normally have a slower chance of success. I found this aspect in him and in his clinic worthy of recognition because I went to another clinic before where you can sense that the doctor was not willing to sacrifice his success rates by taking a woman over 43. He was very clear on my expectations and agreed to accompany my desire to become a single mother at an old age (44 years old). He and his team are on top of the latest research and he doesnt set unrealistic expectations.

clean Friendly state of the art equipment [at Shady Grove Fertility-Washington DC]... Dr. Widra is smart and I really liked him. Dr. Widra is smart and I really liked him. He was sometimes serious but I prefer my doctor to be serious and understand what he is doing than be cheerful and not know what he is doing. One thing I didn't like about him was his preference for singleton versus having twins.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
Do not be bothered by his not so cheerful personality

The clinic [Shady Grove] is too big, i have 6 ultrasounds with 5 different technicians, the retrival is in a place different from the office and nobody you know is there. Its a well functioning machine, but a little bit impersonal...The one and only time I saw him [Dr. Eric Widra] , he was quite clear about expectations and probabilities for a patient who was 44 years old. He was open, a good listener, the only thing I didnt like is that he insisted in some test, that I have already done within the past year, as if they were trying to bill more for their clinic...He was very open about probabilities of pregnancy at 44 years old, and he explained that given good hormonal results that we could try a few times with PGD to see if there are any viable embryos. I found him quite honest.

How was your experience with Eric Widra?
He was very helpful in explaining the process. the nurse is also very helpful. I do think that they don't have as much time to spend on patients due to the number of patients they see each day. It is a little difficult to schedule appointment son weekends with the Rockvile Office
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra?
IF you need to speak with the Doctor himself make appointment sot see him yourself. After the first session you will be communicating with your assigned nurse.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
They understood the journey on which you were embarking and the emotion surrounding it. Dr. Widra and all of the Shady Grove staff were so compassionate. When I read the story of this site's founders I was compelled to do the survey because we were lucky enough to have a great experience. And I am confident I would be writing this even if I did not become pregnant.

When I got a negative result she could not have been kinder and more compassionate. And when I became pregnant, she was elated. They are in lock step with you.

Strengths [of Shady Grove]: friendly staff, quick response times, great monitoring appointment times, usually minimal wait. Financial Counselors responsive. Weaknesses: Sometimes it feels like a factory, nurses and doctors lack empathy and need to think before they speak. Sensitivity training/refresher would be great for everyone. Recently added many more doctors and nurses and feels less personal, chaotic at times. What a new patient should know: Be realistic and take off the rose colored glasses. Prepare for failure. IVF is not always the answer, sometimes it doesn't work even after multiple attempts with seemingly great outcomes. Advocate for yourself, do your research, question everything, demand respect. Ask for detailed description of an egg retrieval, from talking to anesthesiologist in triage, to walking into operating room and what and who to expect to see. Take all of your pain meds after retrieval, even if you don't think you need them (you will). PGS test and only transfer normals (don't set yourself up for failure and heartbreak if you don't have to).

Very personal attention when I first started seeing Dr. Sagoskin. Loved him and his no nonsense manner. 2+ years later and no success, I feel like I'm being treated more like a number and an inconvenience at times.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Very detailed and thorough. Extremely responsive with email and voicemail. Knowledgeable. Respected. We had a miscommunication that damaged our relationship, but we were able to put that aside. I trust her and would strongly recommend her to others patients.

How was your experience with Arthur Sagoskin?
Strengths: experienced; knowledgable; offered suggestions for further testing (I wish he would have suggested a few tests must sooner); followed up after negative results and a lose; advocated for me during a miscommunication between my nurse/him/embryology. Weaknesses: disingenuous at times; not proactive at the right times (I offered up tests/procedures I would like to do, etc. and he would say "good idea" -- but shouldn't he have suggested them?); mildly responsive messages.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Arthur Sagoskin?
Advocate for yourself and be aware of all the tests available to you and push for them, even if they are "experimental" or "unproven".
Describe the protocols Arthur Sagoskin used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I was 38 when I started treatment. Protocol 1: BCPs, Antagonist protocol, lower doses of Gonal F and Menopur, slow & long stim, Ganarelix, Lupron/HGC dual trigger. 20+ follicles, only 2 retrieved, both mature, both fertilized naturally, and 3-day transfer of visually great embryos, BFN. Protocol 2: BCPs, Antagonist, higher doses of Gonal F and Menopur, slow & Ling stim,, Ganarelix, HCG trigger, (I demanded aftee the suggestion of two other REs) double-lumen needle during retrieval, 25 eggs retrieved, at least half mature, all fertilized naturally, 6 high grade blastocysts, eSET, positive beta (but low), doubled two times, then deceased and miscarried at 6 weeks (they say chemical since no heartbeat was seen, I consider a miscarriage). Frozen five 5-day blastocysts. Protocol 3: BCPs, Antagonist, highest doses (yet) of Gonal F, Menopur, Ganarelix, slow stim, HCG trigger, double-lumen retrieval, 25 eggs retrieved, 13 mature, 13 fertilized with ICSI, freeze all with PGS testing, 2 6-day hatching blastocysts biopsied and frozen. Thawed 5 frozen blasts from Protocol 2, lost one in thaw, biopsied 4 for PGS testing and refroze. PGS tested 6 blasts, 2 (1 from protocol 2 and one from protocol 3) tested as PGS normal. FET #1: BCPs, Non-injectable E2 and P4 administered vaginally. eSET PGS normal 6-day blast from Protocol 3, BFN. Before next FET elected to do Endometrial Receptivity Array (ERA) biopsy/testing with BCPs then Injectable E2 and P4 + 5 days. Biopsy returned "non-receptive". Retest ERA with BCP then injectable E2 and P4 + 7 days. Biopsy returned "receptive". Waiting to do transfer of remaining PGS normal 5-day blast from Protocol 2. Will do BCPs, then back to back Endometrial "scratches" (one tests for endometriosis, one may aid with implantation) and then transfer. Waiting for CD1 to start new FET protocol with Injectable E2 and P4 + 7.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Arthur Sagoskin.
I have some insurance coverage so meds for 2 of 3 cycles was fully covers and paid for one cycle of meds out-of-pocket. Specialist company's for each visit including monitoring. Insurance covered all procedures except for PGS testing (covered biopsy) and RhoGam shot after miscarriage (due to blood type).

How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien?
I went to Dr O'Brien after having a rather negative experience with a different doctor and it was like night and day. Our case was a little unconventional. Because of how far away we lived from Rockville, we didn't meet Dr O'Brien in person until the day of egg retrieval but we both felt like we already knew each other from various phone interactions. Dr. O'Brien is a busy person, to be sure, but I never had a day where I had a question or concern that I didn't at least get a return phone call by the end of the day. Her positivity is contagious and she was always ready with a plan b or c when plan A didn't work. As someone who despises going to the doctor it truly suprised me the day I realized that I saw here as more of a friend than a doctor. If you need someone in your corner, someone to keep faith that this will work even when you've lost all yours, Dr. OBrien is a great choice
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien?

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I loved Dr. Doyle and his nurse Sheila. Some of the other nurses and staff were just cold and not always friendly.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Sheila and Jessica were Dr. Doyle's nurse and assistant. Both were on top of my treatment and would always be compassionate when they had to deliver bad news. I appreciated that.
How was your experience with Joseph Doyle?
My husband and I attended a seminar held by Dr. Doyle. He was so nice and explained IUI and IVF clearly. We had 2 appointments with him and he did one of the IUI procedures. I felt completely comfortable with him but unfortunately there has been no success. He did warn us that nothing was guaranteed. We are now taking a break from treatment just to clear our heads. My only real issue with the facility were some of the nurses. Dr. Doyle's nurse Sheila was great but some of the others were cold and not as friendly.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Doyle?
Dr. Doyle is great and explains things well but in the end you speak to his nurse more than him. I would still return to him because he had a great sense of humor and when he felt that we were losing hope he did personally do one of the IUI procedures. I would and will be more insistent in communicating with him directly.
Describe the protocols Joseph Doyle used in your cycles and their degree of success.
All of our tests were negative. We had unexplained infertility. Since we had nothing diagnosed as being "wrong" Dr. Doyle suggested we try IUI first since my insurance covered six cycles. Even though they were not successful I'm glad we tried it so we can be prepared for IVF.

they [Shady Grove] accidentally thawed my husband's sperm without telling us but continued to charge us the storage fee. This was huge and they didn't see it as a big deal. When male infertility is the diagnosis and we felt the sperm at the time was good enough to freeze-its a big deal!...My biggest criticism with the clinic is their financial department. They are so money grubbing its disgusting. I have a $5K balance after one cycle because of course they collect all the money up front without factoring in all of the insurance available. They never told me about this balance they owed me. I noticed it after one follow up visit and asked why they hadn't refunded me. They explained they assumed I would just use it towards my next cycle. First off, I didn't have another cycle planned at the time And secondly, they didn't connect the dots and realize that my insurance covered most all of the treatment so I would never owe them $5K for a cycle...Since then I have burned through all of my insurance benefits, but this was not the case at the time. Also they didn't explain when I would owe the money so I checked out at an appt early on in my first cycle and the Finance person told me I owed thousands of dollars It caught me completely off guard.

This was huge and they didn't see it as a big deal. When male infertility is the diagnosis and we felt the sperm at the time was good enough to freeze-its a big deal!
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. O'Brien was very engaging Calling us directly to explain results. Emailing us to discuss options. She was receptive to our ideas.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
We're actually in the middle of a transition. I loved our nurse Debbie Rice and even though she no longer supported Dr. O'Brien she was still assigned to us so we could work with the same nurse throughout so she would work with Dr. O'Brien even though she worked for another doctor. For this upcoming cycle we have to work with a new nurse for the first time as Debbie is out on medical leave. We have already been disappointed. Debbie was so accommodating to our schedules and requests whereas our new nurse (Jessica Buggs) hasn't made any effort at all. It is so disappointing I hope it doesn't negatively affect our final cycle

How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien?
Dr. O'Brien told us up front that given all of our conditions it would be like finding a needle in a haystacks, but she was very persistent and after 4 years we finally got pregnant. She went out of her way to ensure she was available to do our retrievals and transfers
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien?
There is a bit of a disconnect between her and her nurses.
Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Our main objective was to produce as many eggs as possible since we were dealing with male infertility issues. She ensured the top embryologist was available during the retrieval for the ICSI afterwards. Additionally she was very receptive to our ideas re: protocol.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeanne O'Brien.
I had great coverage for the first 3 rounds and then we started carrying two insurances but I believe it was around $8K per round as my husband had to have procedures as well And we had to have genetic testing as we are both CF carriers.

Shady Grove Fertility makes you feel like you're in good hands. We were initially planning to go with a much smaller fertility center but have been so pleased with Shady Grove. Despite the size of the practice, the staff is well-trained, there's always someone available on-site or the phone to answer questions and they consistently treat you like a person. I've interacted with a handful of doctors beyond my primary one for monitoring visits and all have been great. They do everything they can to help achieve a successful pregnancy. The nursing and sonographer team is extremely well-trained too. The one area of weakness is the Financial Department. There's lots of turnover there (we've had 4-5 different financial counselors in a year on our account), information on costs and payment options requires lots of clarifying questions and the team seems rushed and less pleasant than those on the medical side.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Nicole is very kind and compassionate. She takes the time to answer all of your questions thoroughly and does timely follow-up.
How was your experience with Michael Levy?
Dr. Levy provides the perfect mix of compassionate, high-quality care with honesty about outcomes. He really cares about his patients and seems to work hard at making sure you don't feel like just a number.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Levy?
Know that most of your dealings will be with your nurse, but Dr. Levy is often available if you need to speak with him. If there's any significant news, he's the one that calls or meets with you to discuss. He doesn't sugarcoat, but he's also gentle in his honesty. He's good at doling out honesty without shooting down your hopes completely.

My out of pocket expenses at SGF were no more than a few hundred dollars (co-pays)....maybe $600 including the out-of-pocket counseling service required of patients using donor sperm. I paid about $2000 for PGS testing and another $900 for the donor sperm. Medicine cost me under $200 total. The greater majority of my medical expenses were covered by insurance....I am someone who wants to know all of the details and have a thorough plan. Dr. O'Brien was sensitive to this and always took time to explain test results and their implication on next steps/my treatment plan. I know I have only scratched the surface in describing just how wonderful Dr. O'Brien is, but she is nothing short of spectacular. My mother and I have been singing her praises to anyone who will listen. I love Dr. O'Brien and am so grateful for the amazing gift she has given me. Words cannot do justice to the love and appreciation I have for her. She will always have a special place in my heart. If I could remain under her care until the birth of my baby, I would without hesitation.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Among SGF's strengths are the office climate (everyone was friendly, warm, and welcoming at SGF), organization, and supportive environment. They set the bar high for patient care and you should expect to compare your experience at other offices against your experience at SGF. No matter who you engage with, you can be sure that you will be treated with respect, your questions will be answered, and that promises will be kept (if they say they will look into something for you or find out the answer to a question...they will follow through). Everything about my experience at SGF was positive.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. O'Brien was always compassionate and took time to talk to me about next steps in my treatment plan. She made adjustments to my treatment plan based on how I was feeling and always shared enough information so that decisions were well-informed. I have always felt that Dr. O'Brien saw me as more than just a patient/case. She saw me as a woman who desperately wanted to realize a dream of being a mother and she helped me accomplish that dream.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Jessica was compassionate, organized, communicative, and responsive. She was always willing to answer my questions (and ease my worries), responding to my emails and phone calls in a timely manner. She and Dr. O'Brien are the dynamic duo! I would not have made it through this journey without the support and encouragement of Jessica. She is a wonderful asset to the team at SGF and will always have a special place in my heart.
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien?
Dr. O'Brien is an absolute gem!!! My experience as her patient was nothing short of incredible and nurturing. Throughout my journey, Dr. O'Brien was always compassionate, nurturing, and responsive. I think that a big reason why I was able to remain as positive as I was throughout the process was because of Dr. O'Brien and her support of me. I am someone who wants to know all of the details and have a thorough plan. If I could remain under her care until the birth of my baby, I would without hesitation.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien?
The one piece of advice that I would give a prospective patient of Dr. O'Brien is to trust her and have faith. There is noone who will fight harder for you (other than you, of course) in realizing your dream of parenthood.
Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I do not remember much about my treatment protocols. For my egg retrieval, I used Menopur (increased dosing following monitoring appts), Follistim (300), and Cetrotide. I think the trigger was HCG. For transfer, I began with daily IM shots of progesterone in oil and 2x daily estrodial tabs (vaginal). Then, I introduced 3x daily progesterone suppositories and switched to IM progesterone in oil shots to once every 3 days (in addition to 2x daily estrodial tabs).

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
It is very expensive to do this process and Shady Grove is one of the more expensive places. It also can feel like a baby factory at times. I know that they are following their protocols based on research, but at times in speaking with other people going through the same process it started to feel like we were just all thrown in and following the same thing.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
She is very personable and warm and always took time to answer my questions. She genuinely cared about me and my results and wanted this for me.

How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien?
I loved Dr. O'Brien and would highly recommend her. I found her kind, compassionate, very knowledgeable, and communicative about my case and my procedures.she listened to my concerns and my questions and took the time to fully explain everything as I asked.
Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Since I'm a high responder with PCOS and overweight we used a drug that was not clomid for IUIs. I can't remember the Name. We also took a conservative approach since I had not tried to get pregnant previously. As the IUIs were not successful we increased dosages of the drugs and ultimately moved to ivf. The ivf protocol was for a high responder and it was successful first round.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeanne O'Brien.
IUIs with donor sperm and meds were roughly $1500 a procedure with insurance. Ivf with icsi was $15500 with no insurance.

Dew was the care coordinator [at Shady Grove]. She's fantastic and almost always responded to my emails or calls so so quickly! Kaitlin is my nurse. She is very caring and helpful. Always responds to my emails or calls almost always same day. Goes above and beyond to help!...It's a new office. Its very large. The decor is nice - very modern. There is almost always someone at the front desk so, finding your way around isn't difficult. Strength is that they are very prompt. I've never had to wait very long. Weaknesses - they are very busy, so I couldn't always get in during the times I preferred for monitoring.

Dew was the care coordinator . She's fantastic and almost always responded to my emails or calls so so quickly! Kaitlin is my nurse. She is very caring and helpful. Always responds to my emails or calls almost always same day. Goes above and beyond to help!
How was your experience with Frank Chang?
Great bedside manner. Kind. Warm. Didn't sugar coat the fact that my husband and I would more than likely have to do IVF multiple times because of our severe infertility issues. My first egg retrieval was done on a weekend that Dr Chang wasn't on call, so his colleague had to perform the procedure. I had a lot of pain after that procedure. My second egg retrieval was performed by Dr. Chang. I had no pain whatsoever afterward. He's so so nice. He's been in the business for many years. If I ever needed to speak with him, all I had to do was contact my nurse. She would notify him and he would call me back.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Frank Chang?
Come in to his office with a notebook. Have questions already written down in it. Fill in the answers while in the room with him. I did! He's very patient. You can ask him anything regarding fertility.
Describe the protocols Frank Chang used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Microdose Flare Protocol was used twice on me. Lupron, Gonal-F, and Menopur were used. It was unsuccessful. Going with a different protocol next cycle.

The first HSG that they did [at Shady Grove], they pushed the dye too hard and my right tube spasmed shut, making it look like a blockage. As a result we canceled two cycles because they thought I was ovulating on the side with a blockage. Even though there wasn’t one. They still made me pay the full amount for both cycles...$1,800 per IUI...they can make you feel like a number given the size of the operation. They also often forgot about my tubal blockage diagnosis, and told me to go ahead with cycles that should’ve been canceled because I was ovulating on the wrong side. I was also very frustrated that The team who performed my first HSG pushed the die so hard that it caused one of my tubes to spasm shots, mimicking a tube of blockage when they’re actually wasn’t one.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
They have a lot of resources, great office hours, and a large staff so that you don’t run into issues with appointment availability or service. However, they can make you feel like a number given the size of the operation. I wish the clinic had offered a refund for the two cycles that should not have been canceled as a result of their error.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Doyle was very caring, however the practice was so large that I often felt like a number when interacting with everyone else there, which was more often than not.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
The final nurse I worked with, Effie, Was really amazing. She was very compassionate and organized. The reason for the low readings in this area, though, or that I worked with about eight different nurses in the course of my treatment with Dr. Doyle. Some were very good at their jobs, others were not, but there was always a lot of turnover and often they were issues with the handoffs.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call with results
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Canceled a cycle due to clinic error
  • Scheduled the wrong procedure
How was your experience with Joseph Doyle?

Each unmedicated IUI cycle [at Shady Grove Fertility] was about 300-800$ depending on ovulation monitoring. The medicated cycle was a flat fee of $1800 plus medication... Just be prepared to not feel like the one and only client at the clinic...I think the clinic's strength is that they have everything on site. It is a one stop shop for all screening and procedures. Because it is a busy place it can kind of feel like a factory a bit since there are so many people moving through the same procedures as you. However I found all of the nurses and doctors to be extremely friendly when it came time for a test or procedure.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Doyle remembered me every time I went in, listened to my concerns carefully and addressed each one. We even exchanged hiking trail information because we had a common interest.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I found having a care nurse who was responsive was very important. She communicated with me very clearly and was usually very prompt in returning emails within a day and phone calls as well. She was friendly and helpful.
How was your experience with Joseph Doyle?
I felt Dr. Doyle really listened to what I wanted and tailored my care to what I was comfortable with. I wanted a semi-conservative approach seeing as I was over 35 but not diagnosed with any fertility problems. We worked together to come up with a plan that we were both comfortable with and were confident would get me pregnant.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Doyle?
Be honest about what you want and your timeline. Make sure you explain your worries so he can give you the best information to set your mind at ease.
Describe the protocols Joseph Doyle used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I did not want to be too aggressive with my treatment as I was seeking to get pregnant as a single woman over 35 with no known fertility problems. We had screening of hormones an antral follicle count and HSG to confirm everything was looking good. With that confirmation we decided on 2-3 natural IUI cycles and if that didn't work we would move on to a medicated cycle. I did three natural IUI cycles (the last two where my ovulation was confirmed at the lab with blood tests) but they were unsuccessful. I then moved on to a medicated protocol with a low dose of clomid, ovidrel trigger shot and progesterone support after IUI. I really liked this approach as it was aggressive by using the progesterone support, but used a low dose of clomid to reduce the chance of multiples. I only ovulated 2 eggs during that cycle and one was fertilized! I was able to have a healthy pregnancy. I also really liked that there were two ultrasounds early on at 5.5 and 7.5 weeks where I saw a heartbeat and could relax as the risk of miscarriage went down.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Doyle.
Each unmedicated IUI cycle was about 300-800$ depending on ovulation monitoring. The medicated cycle was a flat fee of $1800 plus medication.

We had an exceptional experience with our clinic. From the receptionist, lab technician, sonorgrapher, nurses and physicians, everyone makes you feel they are 100% committed to supporting you and helping you be successful. One thing very different about Shady Grove patients compared to other clinics is that Shady Grove patients have a great understanding about their condition and treatment because the staff provides so much information in person and on their website about treatment, conditions, education, and support groups. The most special thing about Shady Grove is the genuine understanding and compassion. A lot of Shady Grove staff have also experienced infertility, so they truly know what you are going through on this fertility path. The genuineness of all staff sets this clinic apart from all other clinics. You are not just a patient or number to Shady Grove. You are part of the Shady Grove family from your very first appointment.

How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien?
Dr. O'Brien seemed to be perfectly matched to us. Much like myself, she was very determined and positive about our infertility journey. She always made us feel like we were the only patient she had, taking time to answer any questions and detailing our plans as we moved forward with each cycle. We felt very supported by Dr O'Brien, and felt that she grieved our losses and celebrated our successes with us. She was very sensitive and compassionate and always supported us and help us maintain a positive attitude and a sense of hope for future cycles. I fully believe without her determination, compassion, positive and hopeful spirit we may have lost hope ourselves and would have given up. She firmly believed we would eventually become a family, and by placing our trust in her judgment in our treatment plan we have. She gave us every reason to hope and believe at every negative/setback. She is an asset to Shady Grove Fertility Center. I recommend everyone I know experiencing infertility to Dr O'Brien for care because I believe 100% in her abilities, and I know she will treat every patient as special as she made us feel.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien?
Trust her abilities and lean on her for support and hope for your future family. Dr O'Brien makes her patients feel like they have a special and personal relationship with her. You are not just a patient to her.
Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We were on donor egg protocol with estrogen and progesterone. Usually, This is a straightforward protocol, but my body had difficulty in responding. Dr O'Brien changed dosage and frequency of estrogen injections to assist my body in stimulating the uterine lining. In addition she utilized other different medications (estradial, viagra and tomaxifin citrate) throughout my cycles to stimulate my uterine lining to develop enough to support conception. She also performed hysteroscopies, D &Cs and endometrial biopsies to optimize our chances at conception . During my 5 treatment cycles, Dr O'Brien consulted her colleagues and was open to suggestions of her peers to assist us in becoming successful. When we came to the decision to proceed with gestational carrier, our carrier was assigned normal protocol of estrogen and progesterone and she responded appropriately.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeanne O'Brien.
Our insurance did not cover fertility treatment. We were enrolled in shared risk/shared donor money back guarantee program, which I believe was $29,000. In addition, my insurance did pay some costs associated with procedures, testing and surgery costs.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Coming from another clinic to Shady Grove was like night and day. Shady Grove was so much more timely, organized, efficient, and their technology appeared so much more up to date. I cannot say enough good things about Shady Grove.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. O'Brien is forthright and compassionate. She was very responsive and took time to explain our options and predict potential outcomes.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I cannot recall my nurse's name but she was prompt and responsive. She answered all my questions. Kendra Noll was the care coordinator. She is outstanding. When I first called for an appointment at Shady Grove she spent nearly an hour on the phone with me. It was like talking to an old girlfriend. Her compassion and understanding and patience are remarkable.
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien?
We came to Dr. O'Brien after having failure after multiple (3 x IUI, 2 x IVF) cycles at another clinic. It was honestly like night and day. I was becoming reasonably certain I would not find success and so was attracted to the 100% guarantee of Shady Grove. Dr. O'Brien was honest, direct, and forthright. As a provider myself this meant a lot to me. I was already 2 years into the process and didn't want anyone blowing proverbial smoke. We had success with her on our very first try.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien?
She genuinely wants to achieve success. She is smart, up to date on current literature, studies and treatments. Listen to her. She is available via email as well. Have questions ready and she will be ready to answer them for you.
Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I don't clearly remember. I do recall she used less medication than the other clinic and results were immediately better.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeanne O'Brien.

I've worked with 3 nurses at shady grove. I liked all of them but sometimes wonder if they are all completely overworked because it can be difficult to get in touch with them. When I had a miscarriage, I was surprised not to have more regular contact with my nurse. I don't blame her because I imagine she has a long list of clients to follow but it was noticed. There have been a few times in my treatment where shady grove felt more like a factory than a personal, attentive practice.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
I went to 3 sites. I primarily went to Rockville office where the wait times are terrible. I have waited hours for monitoring and have let the staff know how unacceptable it is. I will say, in recent visits, it has shown improvement. I try to go to the K street D.C. Office when possible because it is incredibly efficient. I have also been to sibley but their carrier leaves pretty early so blood work is more challenging there.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Levy treats me like a patient. He has the right balance of compassion and kindness coupled with an ability to make me feel reassured along the way when I had hesitations about the process.

How was your experience with Michael Levy?
Dr. Levy is a wonderful doctor. I appreciate that he made time for me during the harder moments of the IVF process. He has called me from vacation and returned my calls when medication made me feel sick. He is a self-possessed doctor and balances that with compassion. I have felt heard throughout my treatment and took a lot of comfort knowing he was managing my care, even when I didn't speak with him or see him for a long duration of time.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Levy?
Advocate for yourself. This process is so hard. When medications made me feel ill, when procedures felt like unnecessary torture, I let him know and he took the time to rework my protocol and make changes to make the process less miserable. When changes couldn't be made, he took the time to explain their necessity. He has many patients and is in high demand as a doctor so you really need to advocate for yourself, even if through your nurse.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Levy.
We were fortunate to have insurance coverage (we are carriers for a genetic disease so this was for disease prevention). Still, I'm sure we have spent at least 15K between medications, copays and embryo preservation/freezing and thawing.

They are a wonderful clinic and their reviews and reputation are completely true. They are all so compassionate....they are so much more than just a fertility clinic. They are invested in helping couples to have a family...Shady Grove's monitoring hours were in the morning. Yes, there were a lot of people there, and the waiting room was usually full, but you had an appointment time and they had everything together. Blood work first, then ultrasound. They have everything together. You didn't have to wait long.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
They are a wonderful clinic and their reviews and reputation are completely true. They are all so compassionate. We had been to one other clinic before coming to Shady Grove and they are so much more than just a fertility clinic. They are invested in helping couples to have a family. Our other clinic was like a nightmare where we were only good for them to make money off of us.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Chang was so compassionate. He was kind and he listened to all of our questions and made sure we understood everything. He was encouraging as well. We have seen 4 other doctors (rotating schedule at our first clinic) and he was the most caring doctor I have ever met.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Dew was just like Dr. Chang in the way of compassion. She was always willing to help us in any way and answer all questions. She was available to us at all times, and if she wasn't available for any reason, she made sure we had someone to contact during her absence.
How was your experience with Frank Chang?
Absolutely loved him! Felt completely at ease. He is a fabulous doctor!!! My husband felt the same way. My experience with him was 100% a night and day difference from my previous doctor. He never treated us like just a number or a money making endeavor. He always spoke to us with kind words and told us we would be parents. He would get us pregnant.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Frank Chang?
Make it a priority to see him. He's by far the best doctor that we have ever seen. Make seeing him your first choice.
Describe the protocols Frank Chang used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We went into a fresh IVF cycle knowing we would do ICSI. We did the normal stems and then added in Menopur to help the quality of my eggs, instead of focusing on the quantity. I feel like this was the change we needed. We went through stems and then found what appeared to be a hydrosalphinx (fluid filled tube) so we went egg retrieval and froze all embryos. I had that tube removed and then we transferred two embryos, resulting in twins.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
Shady Grove's monitoring hours were in the morning. Yes, there were a lot of people there, and the waiting room was usually full, but you had an appointment time and they had everything together. Blood work first, then ultrasound. They have everything together. You didn't have to wait long.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Frank Chang.
We were pay as you go, and Shady Grove has a discount program you can apply for. We did the Shared Risk program, which is basically a risk free plan. We got a discount on that and then we applied for pharmacy discount programs for our meds as well. We did have to travel and stay at a hotel while there, but it was worth it.

I am not sure how Dr Chang treated other patients but when he learned that I am scientists he made every effort to provide me with data and statistics for every question I had. Additionally when I would get results from any of the tests, a nurse would call to let me know and if I had any questions she was not able to answer Dr Chang would call. When my first pregnancy went wrong, gave me all the answers I needed to deal the best I can with the situation. I am really really grateful for that. He is not someone to cry with you but he is very smart guy who knows his job very well and how to treat his patients.

if anyone can help you - he is the one!
Describe the protocols Frank Chang used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Started with Vivelle patches and cetrotide and afterwards we did Gonal F/Menopur and the final shot was Lupron not HCG which would have been too much for me. I remember that one of the nurses commented that everyone in the clinic is giving HCG and she was asking me 10 times if I am sure the I needed Lupron. I was responding very well to treatment and if I got HCG I wold have likely ended up in hospital due to hyper-stimulation. First pregnancy lost due to trisomy (we biopsied the embryo to learn what went wrong. Would recommend this over waiting at home the embryo goes out on its own. This helped me tremendously to deal with the pregnancy loss. Second cycle we got out twin girls. I carried them full term and they are happy healthy kids and I am well too.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Frank Chang.
we had to pay for medication and IVF cycles out of pocket but doctor's visits were covered by insurance so I would not know the precise sum. I would guess that it was between $20,000 and $25,000 for both cycles with meds. We also got a discount for the cycles because we paid for multiple cycles from once.

How was your experience with Paul Shin?
Paul Shin has the stereotypical rock star surgeon personality. He seems to be mechanically talented as far as actual cutting is concerned, but he isn't a DOCTOR in the sense that a doctor is meant to care for his/her patients. When Dr. Shin' s first and only attempt to help us failed (quite dramatically and surprisingly) he gave up. When we went in for our followup appointment he wasn't interested in even discussing anything but donor sperm. When we explained out RE's plan to move forward without donor sperm, he was utterly dismissive. He mentioned donor sperm three times IN SPITE of us telling him that wasn't the route forward for us at that time. And for the record, we didn't need donor sperm to conceive! Thank goodness he wasn't in charge our case (he is a urologist and our AMAZING RE was in charge) because if he were, our amazing children wouldn't exist! I worry that other REs might not stand up to Dr. Shin's self-important confidence in his believe that if cutting fails then there's no hope at all.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Paul Shin?
Don't give up when he does.

I had a package of two retrievals, as many FETs as were needed, freezing and storage for a year. I qualified for a reduction in price due to my income, and I think it was a little over $15,000. I used both retrievals, so it was an extremely good deal. I also qualified for some reduced price medication for my first round of IVF...Shady Grove is a very large facility and has so many patients. I totally thought that it would feel like a factory and was quite pleasantly surprised that it was by far the best experience I had had. From the doctor to nurse to the people signing you in at the front desk to the financial people and the monitoring nurses, I never had a bad experience. They were all very polite and kind and did not make you feel rushed. The financial consultants were particularly thorough and kind. I had a different doctor for my transfer, Dr. Doyle, and he didn't know me at all but made me feel like I was his patient. I was floored by the contrast between my expectations and my actual experience.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady Grove is a very large facility and has so many patients.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Chang is very compassionate but in a low-key way. Of the three doctors I had, he was the only one who would actually phone me -- it kind of blew me away that he'd call personally instead of getting a nurse to call. The only critique I have of him is one that I knew when I switched: he is not really interested in treating people who suspect themselves to have immunological problems with pregnancy. So he was politely dismissive of IVIG, an immune treatment that was recommended by my previous RE (who I sadly had to leave for financial reasons once I switched to IVF). But other than that, he is compassionate and seemed devastated when he had to tell me he could see no heartbeat for my fifth miscarriage on my first IVF round with him (I did not elect to do IVIG for this transfer).
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Jessica was amazing! Very personable and easy to talk to, very positive. She was totally organized. I was quite surprised because I had expected to have a "dip" when moving to Shady Grove Fertility, which is so large and seemed to have the reputation of a factory. I had the complete opposite experience, personified by Jessica. She was very responsive to email or phone calls, kept track of all my paperwork, and left me the nicest happiest message on my answering machine after my son was born.
How was your experience with Frank Chang?
Dr. Chang is very kind, not super chatty. I had switched to him from another doctor -- they had actually been partners once upon a time and so they knew each other well. My previous doctor, who was more aggressive in treating RPL that had possible immunological causes, told me outright that Dr. Chang would not be in favor of my doing IVIG. I brought him my labwork from the immunological testing that my other doctor had ordered and he was very honest and said, "I don't know I am looking at." He said that he was willing to let me do blood thinning injections, and I had thought that maybe that would be enough, and since I was not super excited about doing IVIG, I was happy enough to try my first round of IVF, after 13 rounds of IUI with 4 miscarriages, without doing the IVIG. Unfortunately I did have my fifth miscarriage with a genetically tested embryo. From that retrieval, I only had one other frozen embryo that did not reveal any results in the genetic testing (perhaps a glitch in the testing, perhaps an indication that it was not a good embryo). As a result, Dr. Chang was more than happy to let me do my second retrieval (I had a package of two retrievals) rather than compel me to use the embryo of uncertain quality. For this round, he did not discourage me from doing IVIG, and so I was super lucky enough for the embryo to finally stick. My son is now three years old. I really liked Dr. Chang as a person, and I know that immune issues in pregnancy have split the RE professional community: some doctors believe it but won't treat it, some doctors just don't believe in it, and then there are RE's out there who really look to immune issues when a patient's history of RPL suggests that it might be present. So I think Dr. Chang is an excellent doctor who just happens to not be in the "immune camp."
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Frank Chang?
If you have had several miscarriages and want to pursue immune testing and treatment, Dr. Chang is probably not the way to go. Other than that, he is a very thoughtful doctor.
Describe the protocols Frank Chang used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Because I had had four IUI miscarriages at another clinic, Dr. Chang strongly recommended that I use a genetically tested embryo rather than do an IVF transfer without genetic testing. I fully agreed. For my first transfer, I injected with Lovenox (a blood thinner), which was his concession to my suspected immune issues. I was also happy to do that since I was honestly a little freaked out by the thought of IVIG. After my miscarriage, Dr. Chang was so disappointed with the RPL that he actually requested that the D&C fetal material be genetically tested (again) just to make sure that the original testing was correct (it was). (My OB thought it was a little silly to test it because the chances of the original testing being wrong are very very slim.) Dr. Chang also called the genetic testing company to find out the gender of embryo, as a way to make sure that we had all the right information. For my second transfer, Dr. Chang saw no reason for me to spend the money on genetic testing again. And so we went for a fresh 5 day transfer. I continued doing the Lovenox injections, and I also informed him that I'd be doing IVIF pre-transfer. He again did not seem to think that the IVIG would help at all, but he did not discourage me. Happily, I did get pregnant and for the first time my HCG doubled and doubled ... and now I have a three year old. The credit for my protocol will have to go to Dr. Abbasi of Columbia Fertility Associates, as well as Dr. Victor Priego, a hematologist at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Shady Grove was a great place to visit - their clinic is prompt and well run. Other places I've gone I've waited over an hour with a scheduled appointment with a full bladder. I never waited more than 5-10 mins. The front desk is kind and their new office in Rockville is beautiful!
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Stillman is an amazing Dr. He took the time to personally walk us through the treatment and the odds step by step. He didn't sugar coat our potential outcomes but he made us feel like he truly cared regarding out outcomes.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Vivan was amazing. Always willing to answer all my crazy questions and even provide some perspective after we got our positive test. It was difficult co-ordinating with my satellite clinic which she took in stride and was able to help me through that difficult portion. She was always available on email and would get back to me same day or next day. She was prompt with my fertilization reports even when I thought they were taking too long at the time.
How was your experience with Robert Stillman?
I've never had a Dr. would would personally call me to make sure everything is ok, or if I left without getting all my questions answered. I was an out of state patient so I only went to the office 2 times. He stayed in constant communication and was just so clear with their treatment path and why they believed it was the best way when I had questions.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Stillman?
Be ready to hear the good and bad but it will only help you in the long run. As a long time fertility patient I did not find it helpful when a Doctor was over confident or told me they should be able to fix my problem. But he was also hopeful and very caring.
Describe the protocols Robert Stillman used in your cycles and their degree of success.
The biggest difference for me is that they were so set on using progesterone in oil which I did not use in the past and my previous doctor wouldn't even consider and wouldn't give me an explanation. I used a donor so I didn't know her exact protocol as far as stimulation meds since it was specific to her.

We have enjoyed Shady Grove Rockville. The offices are beautiful. The desk staff are always so friendly and kind. The nurses who take blood have also been very gentle and kind. The Dr who did both of my IUIs was amazing and so friendly....Kate and Tina [nurses] are very friendly. When we are in person they are very warm and kind. They both answered all the questions we had. My cycle and questions always ended up happening when Tina was out of the office. It was hard to get in touch with her a few times. She also didn't place the order for my medication on time and I almost didn't receive it on time. I called the Pharmacy and it was noted that I was not in the system. I called and emailed Tina on Thursday but she was out of the office until Tuesday. She called me Tuesday afternoon and said that she talked to the Pharmacy and they would rush it to me. In the end it all worked out, however, she is just hard to reach sometimes.

We decided to do all the pretesting to make sure I had a good follicle count and my tubes were clear. We did an medicated IUI first and if it didn't take we would be doing medicated. That is what we are currently doing.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady Grove takes great effort to create an environment with compassionate professional care from the front desk folks that greet you at check-in to the medical staff passed in the halls to even how the waiting space is broken up so you don't walk into a massive open waiting room akin to visiting the DMV. When you're having a tough day as many of us do in this process, those things are comforting. We've been with Shady Grove through three IVF cycles and the one area of weakness is the Financial Services team. The Finance team has high turnover, doesn't always lay out costs clearly and at times may take days to respond to your call or message. That said, they are still pleasant to work with. I would suggest doing most communication on finances via email so you have records.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
While the day to day instructions and details are conveyed by our nurse, Dr. Chang is usually available for questions if requested and called us directly if there was significant news (good or bad). During those calls, he always asked how am I doing--all of which made us feel like our case mattered.

Dr. Chang is pleasant, knowledgeable, honest and an empathetic listener. He seems fully aware of the physical and financial challenges patients often experience. He is slightly hopeful while remaining candid. He also doesn't try to push us in a direction we don't want.

It [Shady Grove-Rockville] is a pretty well-oiled machine. There are so many women (and men) that attend the clinic daily for a multitude of reasons and all are taken care of. There were a few times when I knew that during morning monitoring I needed to follow a certain protocol, as delineated by my nurse, however it was not written in the system and they were unable to reach her because it was before 9 am. I had to turn around and go back which was an inconvenience but not the end of the world.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
It is a pretty well-oiled machine.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
There were times when Dr. Levy called me and helped me understand the process and there were other times where I felt that he could have been talking to anyone and lacked the proper bedside manner.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
She was available by phone and email and usually got back to us within 24 hours, on rare occasions, it took longer. She tried her best to explain everything she understood and managed our case as much as she was able. She answered all questions and was always friendly.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Lost appointments
  • Scheduled the wrong procedure
How was your experience with Michael Levy?
He is so knowledgeable and it was clear from the minute we walked into his office that we were in good hands, medically. I never once wavered in his approach toward our treatment and had full faith in his ability to guide us through these murky waters. Simultaneously, my husband and I felt that he often rushed us off the phone, was not as compassionate as we had imagined he'd be, and was somewhat cavalier about our setbacks when we were visibly struggling.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Levy?
Know that you will be in very good medical care and look for other members of his team (or your own team of family and friends) to lean on for emotional support.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Levy.
We have spent around 40K thus far for IVF treatment (not including medication)

How was your experience with Eric Levens?
I am in Virginia Beach. I go to the Rockville, Maryland location for treatments. Dr. Levens was at this location when I first started treatments but has moved. Although my treatments are remote, I still can call him anytime I have any questions. He calls and checks in on me to see if I have any questions. I monitor outside of Shady Grove but when we were pregnant last and was having heavy bleeding. Dr. Levens asked we go to his clinic so he can personally do our sonogram. I am happy with Dr. Levens. He is a great doctor. Too bad he is not in Virginia Beach. Shady Grove is worth the travel.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Levens?
Do research and trust the process.
Describe the protocols Eric Levens used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We started with progesterone vaginal inserts and progesterone injections. Then, we moved to progesterone injections and was able to have implantation. As for estrogen, we started we just injections, second cycle we added estrogen vaginal inserts twice a day and now, inserts are up to three times a day. The change to estrogen have increase the uterine lining before implantation and increase of progesterone injections dosage have decrease bleeding after transfer.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Levens.
$25,000 donor egg, risk share program.

I went to this clinic [Shady Grove of Rockville] for over 2.5 years and got to know everyone quite well. Everyone was very friendly, and they mostly ran on time...IUI was about $1500 IVF was about $10,000 Donor egg (shared) was about $20,000...I switched to Dr. Levy because I did not like his partner at the same clinic. Dr. Levy treated me like a person and I always felt like I had his undivided attention. If fact when I switched to him, I had been under the other doctors care for over a year and had had 8 IUI treatments with no success and the other doctor never stopped to ask "what is going on here?". Immediately upon beginning to see Dr. Levy he assessed me and my treatment and began to look further into why I wasn't getting pregnant which resulted in a different direction of treatment.

Describe your experience with your nurse.
I really loved my first nurse Lindsay which is why I ended up staying with my first doctor longer than I should have. Most of my dealings were with her and she was amazing. When she left Shady Grove I decided to get a new doctor as I did not like my first.
How was your experience with Michael Levy?
Dr. Levy is a kind, patient man. He got to know me on a personal level. At our initial meeting he came to get me from the waiting room and asked me about the book I had been reading. I felt good about him overseeing my treatment and I didn't have an easy time with anything related to fertility.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Levy?
If you can get him as your doctor do so!
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
I went in during monitoring hours which worked for me. I thought the techs were super nice and friendly.

The whole process was very emotional and the office [Shady Grove Fertility] didn't always communicate clearly and when I called to inquire (usually about a medication or timing) I was once told "to just wait" and that he wasn't doing the transfer until HE [Dr. Michael Levy] was ready. m(He later apologized)...As the intended mother I was not always made aware of what drugs were being prescribed and timelines for procedures with my donor and my gestational carrier. This was very frustrating.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
I think the clinic is a reflection of the doctor. Sometimes as a patient I was made to feel my questions or concerns were an inconvienience.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?

Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
It was very hit or miss and some were definitely more compassionate than others.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Failed to convey critical information
How was your experience with Michael Levy?
I did not like his bedside manner- I thought he was callous and not compassionate to the emotional turmoil. However, he helped me to concieve my son (17 months of treament) and ultimately my daughter (donor egg and gestational carrier) and I will always be eternally grateful for his success. I don't think he is "nice" but I think he knows what he is doing.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Levy?
Do not expect warm and fuzzy and don't take it personally.
Describe the protocols Michael Levy used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I spent seventeen months taking clomid and metformin until my son was concieved (2002) and then used an egg donor and a gestational carrer (3 transfers with 2 separate carriers) with my daughter born in 2009. I do not remember all the drugs used for the egg retrieval and insemination.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Levy.
Insurance covered my 17 months of infertility. Egg Donor and retrieval was about $20,000 Transfers were in the $10,000 range each if I remember correctly.

the billing department, and admin staff [at Shady Grove] treated us like a number. We were often overbilled without explanation...Our nurses were great...we have had a positive experience. However there were occasions where the admin staff provided information that was incorrect. For example we received a bill for storage costs for a frozen embryo. This was a shock to us as we did not actually have any embryos that were able to be frozen.
